A judge on Friday rejected California’s lawsuit against the city of Huntington Beach over a local measure allowing officials to require voter identification at the polls.
Orange County Superior Court Judge Nico Dourbetas ruled that existing state law does not block the local measure, which was approved by voters earlier this year. The ruling could clear the way for the majority-Republican city to implement one of California’s only voter ID requirements at the polls in local elections.
“It’s a massive black eye to the state of California,” City Attorney Michael Gates said of the ruling. “And what the state of California needs to know, if they haven’t found out already, is Huntington Beach is not going to be intimidated or deterred.”
State Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office said in a statement to The Associated Press that the Friday decision “does not address the merits of the case.”
“We continue to believe that Huntington Beach’s voter ID policy clearly conflicts with state law, and will respond appropriately in court,” the office added.
Residents in the seaside city of Huntington Beach voted in March for a ballot measure that lets local officials require voter identification at the polls starting in 2026. It also allows the city to increase in-person voting sites and monitor ballot drop boxes in local elections.

Would be nice to see the new congress require voter ID nationally.
Catch is the only photo ID that will work is like the Kamala Harris picture on the giant sphere in Las Vegas.
$500,000 each.
RE: Would be nice to see the new congress require voter ID nationally.
What would that mean they’re trying to do? Bring America fair and honest elections?
I’ve been praying for this. It’s a good start. Thank God.
Voting integrity is a constitutional issue. Voter integrity is protected by 14th and 15th amendments. A reformed DOJ will intervene to protect those disenfranchised by fraud.
If the states want to interfere, they can be charged with obstruction of justice.
Agreed.
Or the states can just follow their own dang existing laws which are probably not criminal friendly either.
I agree.
“Orange County Superior Court Judge Nico Dourbetas ruled that existing state law does not block the local measure,”
That will change quick because the democrats control the state legislature.
“We continue to believe that Huntington Beach’s voter ID policy clearly conflicts with state law, and will respond appropriately in court,” the office added.
Well, God forbid if only citizens are allowed to vote in our elections, right Rob?
It would, but I get really nervous when federal laws are applied to states rights when it comes to voting. Next thing you know, we lose the Republic.
I agree we need to be really careful, but as Elon Musk and a couple other people pointed out, we almost lost the Republic this election. With the legal immigration and their strategic dispersal of illegals to battleground states, and then amnesty to follow that. We would be a one party government
So I think we need to risk it somehow to get our elections back to where they need to be. As far as I can see, I believe a Senate was stolen in Nevada, Arizona, and Michigan because of this crap.
Without honest elections we don’t have a republic.
If you think the federal govt can make elections ‘honest’ without a Constitutional amendment then you have another think coming. The one size fits all that the feds would put us in would have us a one party state like California in no time. We’d end up being owned lock stock and barrel by Washington DC instead of the individual states as it is now. What’s needed is an article 3 convention of the states to put a citizen only voting amendment in the bill of rights along with some other provisions that block the feds from interference with that. I’m sure you’ve heard of the movement which many states have already signed on to. We need to all get behind it.
California no voter ID law is illegitimate.
Every state that voted Kamala was a no-ID-Required state.
