South Dakota Senator John Thune—not Senator Rick Scott, the preferred choice of some in the Make America Great Again (MAGA) faction—will be the next Senate majority leader following a vote by Senate Republicans on Wednesday.
Thune, who has been serving as minority whip, has previously criticized President-elect Donald Trump but has supported an overwhelming majority of his policies.
Here's how Thune has voted under the past two administrations.
Thune's Voting Record During Trump's First Term
During President-elect Donald Trump's first term, beginning in 2017, Thune largely voted in line with Trump's positions.
In the 115th Congress, from 2017 to 2019, Thune aligned with Trump's stance just over 95 percent of the time, according to 538, breaking over tariffs, sanctions, and immigration, among others.
In the following session, from 2019 to 2021, the South Dakota senator supported Trump's positions 88 percent of the time. He broke with Trump over disaster aid to Puerto Rico, government funding, and the National Defense Authorization Act, among others.

His record on gun rights seems unimpeachable.
According to the Heritage Action For America he only voted with conservatives 37% of the time the last 2 years. His lifetime score is 62%.
This guy is awful.

He is Deep State RINO pond scum.
He is not going to help. He is going to sabotage.
His daughter runs, or is heavily involved in, an anti-Trump PAC.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
Compromise is what he had to do the last 10 years, to secure McTurtle’ support. Now there is no RAT in the WH and he’s free to drift back to MAGA positions.
Breaking from Trump on immigration?
Uh-oh.
There may be some practical concern that merits a more moderate choice here. For example, winning some who would otherwise be knee jerk “no” votes.
Trump doesn't need Congress in any way for the border. We need NO new laws. The Border Wall Act of 2006 is still on the books, and he can redirect DHs funds to that purpose and ignore any court rulings against it (for environment, etc), citing national security under the Patriot Act.
RINO City
Possibly. In a normal world, that might be true. We do not inhabit that world.
Given past history, I don’t trust him. We only have two years to gain a finger hold from having our country slide into an abyss.
People like McConnell, Thune, and Cornyn are the people who will aid and abet those who wish to thwart us from gaining that precarious finger hold.
Now is the time to fight. Not the time to surrender and take half measures.
We cannot squander this. And Thune is going to aid the Left in squandering it.

I’m sure he’s what the GOPe wants. Not us.
So, how are they to be stopped? Seriously, what can be done?
Today the senate reminded everyone how powerful they are. Thune is obviously a globalist. Just look at him! Hopefully he’ll be somewhat useful but, again, the senate will continue to flex its muscles. Muscles that stall America-first aims.
We shall see. But one thing is sure-it won’t be stopped if we roll over and accept it as a fait accompli.

Right. You gotta vote him in to see what he’s gonna do
Republican voters who want Thune out will do what they’ve always done. They’ll wait him out. He’s 63 years old. He’s only got maybe 20 years left. 30 tops.
