The rising costs of these three household items may seem like examples of Bidenomics at work over the last four years. But if that’s what you’re thinking, think again.
These are the kinds of price increases American consumers can expect if President-elect Donald Trump proceeds with some of the tariff proposals he floated on the campaign trail this year, according to a new report from the National Retail Federation.
The report found that Trump’s tariff proposals could cost consumers $46 billion to $78 billion annually just for the six product categories its authors reviewed — apparel, footwear, furniture, household appliances, toys, and travel goods. That’s $362 to $624 every year per household, according to the report.
Other broader studies have found that the tariffs floated by Trump could cost American families thousands of dollars annually, up to $7,600 every year, with the impact being felt most intensely by low- and middle-income families.
“They’re the ones that will bear the brunt of these tariff increases and the price increases,” said Jonathan Gold, the federation’s vice president of supply-chain and customs policy.

I am fine with price rise from the artificial lows we have been enjoying due to the products we buy being made by a semi slave labor force in foreign countries. Taking the shackles off of oil production and almost all regulation from American industry will go far to mitigate the price effects of tariffs as it drives down production and transportation prices and as the price of your Chinese-made shoes goes up your electricity bill goes down. There are tradeoffs and we maybe get our industrial base back so that we can survive a major(non-nuclear) war. I am living off of half average SS and working as a security guard. I am not blowing off this due to any sort of affluence.
Did their prices include the reduced cost of fuel and regulations?

It’s a complex topic. I worked with client companies doing international trade.
It’s not fair to have an unlevel playing field. Other countries use slave labor and we pay benefits.
No one was really concerned about the price of groceries people buy every week but we’re to be concerned about... couch prices? 🤔

I have a couple of low-end rentals. One thing that amazes me is the amount of super expensive stuff “poor” people have. They buy $10 per pack cigarettes and then tell me they can’t make the rent. I’m an evil landlord because I won’t subsidize their stupid spending.
If people are spending crazy money for consumables, I have no sympathy.
During Covid manufacturers started reshoring. With modern technology and new factories locally built consumer goods can be turned out cheaper and with higher quality than imported goods. Bring on the tariffs. Nobody will build new plants unless they are forced to.
