The pattern is clear, though the numbers may be slightly different when the final results are available. The state with the biggest Trump percentage increase was his native New York (6.9%), followed by California (5.6%), New Jersey (5.3%), Maryland (5.1%), Florida (5.0%), Illinois (4.9%), Connecticut (4.6%), and Texas (4.3%). They include the four highest-population states. All eight of them have large immigrant and Hispanic populations. The CNN exit poll reported that Trump lost Latino voters to Harris by only a 53 to 45% margin, a historic high percentage for a Republican and one that lays to rest Democratic analysts’ hopes that a rising percentage of “people of color” would provide their party with a permanent majority of the ascendant.
The gains are even more striking on Trump’s home turf. His percentage in the five boroughs of New York City rose by 8.3%, more than in any state, and in the four suburban counties (Nassau and Suffolk on Long Island and Westchester and Rockland up the Hudson), it rose by 9.3%.
Down around Mar-a-Lago, the Trump percentage in the three Florida Gold Coast counties (Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade) rose by 7.7%. The Gold Coast, long Florida’s Democratic stronghold, which gave Biden a 58 to 41% margin just four years ago, this year voted for Harris by only a 50 to 49% margin.
Trump’s majority coalition is yeastier and more demotic than the last Republican presidential majority in 2004. It has built on the Deep South majorities won by former President Ronald Reagan, has expanded former President George W. Bush’s breakthroughs in Greater Appalachia, and now, in 2024, has made its own gains among the descendants of the Ellis Island immigrants who remain in the Northeast and those who have slid down I-95 and I-85 to the South Atlantic.

One point that is not being brought up is that several Democrat states pledged to turn their EC votes to the winner of the popular vote.
Guess who won the popular vote that night?
Bump
Barons orders some good insights in this article, but this summation is surprising because of its one glaring omission. How do you overlook the most significant transformation Trump has made on the national political scene: TWICE winning Rust Belt states that Republican presidential candidates haven’t won in decades?
I’m proud of home state of West Virginia, after voting for Trump by a 68%/26% margin in 2016 and 68%/30% in 2020. We FINALLY broke the 70% threshold in 2024 (70%/28%). Yes, not a huge difference, but a moral victory none the less.
“TWICE winning Rust Belt states that Republican presidential candidates haven’t won in decades?”
Yeah and you know why??
The Bushes, Bob Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Get away from that pantywaist model and go back the Nixon/Reagan model and you get Republican victory.
But the pantywaist types that have run the party actually LIKE and PREFER Democrat victory. And they’ve finally been exposed and ousted.
Congratulation!
Enjoy!
Dole was the better of those five so it turned out.
But the fake news is still propping up for the dims twisting the truth or just not talk about it and find that magic moment picture moment all the while reversing it all on what obozo denigrated with his transmission low mentality connection ploy analogy. Put the caaa in D indeed dimocwats
Because you wanted to use the words “yeastier” and “demotic” in a sentence. ;-)
Barone writes and thinks like a dinosaur political analyst, for a world that doesn’t exist, anymore.
One thing seems clear to me - Trump set the bar for campaigning VERY high and in three elections. The Democrat opposition didn’t respond in the slightest. They have a Chinese view of the voter - you will vote as you are told, or else.
Without election reform, even Vance will not be able to match Trump’s performance.
“several Democrat states pledged to turn their EC votes to the winner of the popular vote.”
Did they keep their promise?
I think only Wyoming topped your state at 72%+ for Trump.
Harriet Hageman rocks!!!!! Best replacement possible for disillusioned Liz. Hageman should run for governor in 2026.
Probably not. I don’t expect it.
“demotic”? Has he been watching Jeeves and Wooster?
Jeeves, responding to a question about the meaning of “hoochie-coocher”, “It’s difficult to say, sir, unless it’s in connection with one of the demotic American words for ardent spirit.”

We won’t know until the EC formally holds the vote on December 17. I expect the next two months up to Trump’s inauguration in January to be a political version of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Cheers!
I love that the IDIOT PHONY HOGAN FROM MARYLAND ...LOST...LOST
HE WAS GOING TO GO TO THE SENATE AND MAKE “nothing but trouble” for republicans.
HE WAS HONEST...AND HE GOT ZOTTED.
I LOVE IT.
