Nervously watching Israel's wars with Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iraq is working to avoid being drawn into the growing regional conflict as Iran-backed groups launch attacks on Israel from Iraqi soil, sources familiar with the matter say.
Two decades after the US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, Iraq is experiencing relative stability with high revenue from oil sales funding a service-based agenda that has turned much of the country into a construction site.
Iraq does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's government is wary of regional conflicts that could affect its delicate balancing act between Washington and Tehran, both states it is allied with.
Iran says it is committed to the destruction of Israel and supports terrorist groups throughout the Middle East in pursuit of that goal...
Sudani's government has not been successful in a push to convince the Islamic Resistance in Iraq — a coalition of Iran-backed militias and terror groups — to stop firing rockets and drones at Israel, according to four sources from Iran-backed groups and two government advisers.
Two visits to Iran by Iraq's top security officials in the past two months, seeking Tehran's help to rein in its allied Iraqi factions, failed, the sources said...
Four sources from armed groups said the Kataeb Hezbollah and Nujaba groups, which are leading the attacks on Israel, have warned the prime minister against pressuring them to halt their actions and vowed to continue their attacks as long as Israel continues its operations against Hamas and Hezbollah.

Tehran said to have denied Baghdad's requests to have pro-Iran militias in Iraq discontinue strikes on Israel and US forces in region
Iraq and Lebanon are both pseudostates.
Heckuva job Bush/Cheney!

[Heckuva job Bush/Cheney!]
Mission Accomplished!
I think that Kamalamadingdong making the despicable Cheney’s her besties has hurt her badly with both Demonrats and Republicans. Did the ditz have no idea of how hated Dick and Lizard by everyday Americans?
Still looking for Hussein’s WMD.
Bush brought democracy to Iraq by making it a puppet state of Iran, apparently. Between him and Carter, the Middle East is going swimmingly if the goal is to reestablish an Islamic Caliphate.
And the Yellow Cake.
Many Middle Eastern states are artifically cobbled together from the wreckage of the Ottoman Empire.
Yep, WWI and the Brits who drew the maps afterwards are still the ‘gifts that keeps on giving’.
Well....
It might have turned out better if, assuming we’d end up with troops still in Iraq anyway, Obummer had agreed to the Iraqi requests to keep enough in that you didn’t allow the rise of ISIS. (Not dicking around in Syria would have helped too, but, I’m of the opinion that a power vacuum in Iraq was certain to cause big problems regardless.)
I’m also of the opinion that minority Sunni rule in Iraq was always gonna blow up anyway too, sooner or later, so what the heck is a good option?
One can’t really blame the Iraqi gov’t for turning to Iran if that’s what they had to do to keep ISIS and similar groups suppressed.
As for this article, I wonder how much area of Iraq is actually stable, and how much so well under the control of the Iran backed militias that said militias actually have (or had) air defense missile batteries?
Kinda hard to avoid WW1 given the setup in Europe. :-(
Perhaps the Brits’ intent was a sort of permanent “divide and weaken”, despite the guarantee of almost continuous conflict that would create. I mean, I suppose in hindsight one could examine, say, Indonesia, for some sort of guidance in how on earth you keep the ME halfway peaceful, but, just simply given the nature of the people in the ME, and lack of a power like the Ottoman Empire which is (and was) quite a threat itself, historically speaking, would having a bunch more contiguous countries actually be better?
Iran is one of the more “undivided” countries, and look what we have there. Egypt’s gov’t only stay in power with the backing of a large army, a cash cow in the Suez Canal, and lots of support from the US. Saudi and other oil rich states buy off populations that would go radical / violent at the slightest hint, otherwise. Pakistan... well, see what I mean. This crap goes back all the way to Pontius Pilate writing about it.
In that context, I almost wonder if Bush’s Gulf War was a sort of Hail Mary? That is, there was little chance of it working, but better than no chance? And as for the Brits, they took the least bad choice of the possible choices?
“stays in power”
I’m convinced that ISIS grew directly as a result and with help of Obama and friends (including a few Republicans). He gave them direct aid and support through the Syrian rebels, whom McMain called the “good guys”. For 8 years they rampaged across the Mid East taking over more and more of it, while Obama smilingly said “I can’t do anything about it—I’m only the president”. Then Trump took office and they were gone in less than 6 months. Are people this blind not to see it? Obama is a freaking Islamic terrorist. They knew it in Egypt, a country he tried to destroy but failed.
