Kemi Badenoch has promised to win back voters who have deserted the Conservatives after securing an historic victory in a party leadership contest against fellow right-winger Robert Jenrick.
The 44-year-old becomes the first black woman to lead a major political party in the UK.
She defeated Jenrick by 12,418 votes after a marathon contest to replace Rishi Sunak, who led the party to the biggest defeat in the party's history in July's general election.
In her victory speech, Badenoch promised to "renew" the party and told cheering supporters it was "time to get down to business". Badenoch, who is the sixth Tory leader in less than nine years, now faces the task of uniting a fractured party and leading opposition to Sir Keir Starmer's Labour government.
The Saffron Walden MP said the Conservatives need to "bring back" voters who abandoned them, adding: "Our party is critical to the success of our country.
"But to be heard, we have to be honest."
The party must admit it “made mistakes” and “let standards slip” over the last 14 years in government, she said.
Badenoch chose not to set out detailed policies during her campaign, focusing instead on returning the Conservatives to "first principles".
All eyes will now turn to who she appoints to her top team as she sets out the future shape of the party over the coming days. ...

Won’t work.
Should have been Nigel Farage.
Unless the UK is willing to give up its beurocratic socialist boot, it won’t rally.
...the 44-year-old becomes the first black woman to lead a major political party in the UK... to replace Rishi Sunak, who led the party to the biggest defeat in the party's history in July's general election.
Yeah, that should work. Until they go after Two Tier Keir, the Tories and the UK in entire is circling the drain. Then 'glug'.
When will they get a Muslim to be Tory leader?
Paging the UK, the following goes for you, too...
FYI, the letter after the name means jack anymore.
The only reason political parties still exist is to give voters the illusion of choice.
A pol is either loyal to our former republic or to Deep State.
What the UK doesn’t have, and desperately needs, is its own Trump.
What the UK doesn’t have, and desperately needs, is its own Trump.
Actually they do, Nigel Farage.
Tories have been circling the drain since they jettisoned Enoch Powell.
The Brits are stuck with that loony Labour party for another four and half years... By that time, the UK may be become totally socialist and likely a third world country.
Labour leader Keir Starmer is already the most hated politician in UK history and he’s only been in office since July 4th... His approval rating is down to 23%...
I'd rather vote for The Silly Party
Not the Very Silly Party?
L
They need to hire muslims to systematically undermine Labour (astroturf, not gangsters). Starmer's been screwing the elderly and other pensioners, screwing working people, screwing actual British people, and intends to raise taxes.
You lied for years. In previous century you and all of yours would be tarred&feathered. Any support you receive is funded by labor party (& no, I won’t insert that asinine “U” !).
But the thing is, they don’t directly vote for a Prime Minister, like they do President here.
Churchill would have wiped the floor with Clement Atlee if there was a direct election between the two in 1945.
But Labour did a better job of selling their post-war vision, while the Tories just relied on Churchill’s popularity.
Are we still allowed to hope for a Margaret Thatcher Conservative?
I cannot remember even one elected Black USA Republican who did not seriously disappoint Conservatives in the long run.
I think we had several who showed real promise, but then got defeated in their second election.
You can’t embrace the globalist agenda and be a majority party.
Farage isn’t a Tory.
He’s too good for them.
