Sir Keir Starmer has warned NHS staff they are likely to see their workload 'go up, not down' – just a day after the service secured billions more pounds in the Budget.
Speaking on a hospital visit alongside Chancellor Rachel Reeves yesterday, the Prime Minister told clinicians: 'We are going to be asking more of you.'
His remarks risk deepening the workforce crisis, which has seen burnt-out staff quitting their jobs for less stressful and better-paid roles overseas.
The tax rises and increased borrowing in the Budget will provide the NHS with an extra £3.1billion to spend on capital over the next two years, including new beds, scanners and clinics.
Meanwhile, Ms Reeves pledged an extra £22.6billion for day-to-day spending, including salaries.
Sir Keir told staff at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire: 'There's no point me standing here and saying your workload will go down.
'The whole point is people are living longer, they've got more conditions.
'What the NHS is facing now is different to what it was facing in the post-war period; your workload is likely to go up, not down.'
He added: 'Are we going to help you therefore? Yes.'
Sir Keir said he wants to make sure 'that AI and technology is your friend', so that some things 'can be done better and differently', including eliminating the need to take 'the same details from the same patient over and over'.

Doesn’t help that he keeps allowing 100,000s of boat people coming over putting strain on resources and allowing legal immigration of millions more by having low skilled workers bringing in all their dependents who also add to the strain.

To her credit, she is at least married to a guy. Surprising, but having no kids is probably enough for her cis marriage to be tolerated over there.
