There’s another legitimate reason to claim one was facing persecution in Mauritania. I had female genital mutilation, apostasy from Islam, being homosexual. And now, escaping slavery.
Mauritania is not a country in conflict.
And anyone who makes it here has some resources, so he is not an escaped slave.
90% or more have to be young men looking for adventure and wealth, practicing Muslims claiming their bit of ground.

I think compared to its recent past, that is true, but it’s hardly stable.
It’s really been a dump since the Arabs invaded in the 1600s. During the middle ages, it was a bit of a shinning star for Africa. After the Arabs came in, not so much.
