Who Voted Early on Georgia's Record-Breaking First Day? County Breakdown

The first in-person votes have been cast in the critical swing state of Georgia, and both campaigns are likely looking for encouraging signs from the latest numbers. But who has been voting? And what does that mean for the race for the White House?

On Tuesday, Georgia broke the record set for the first day of early voting, after voters cast 415,688 ballots, according to the secretary of state's election data hub. The previous record, set in 2020, was 136,000 votes on the first day of early voting. The tracker is updated at the end of every day, after polls close at 5 p.m.

Audrey Haynes, an associate political science professor at the University of Georgia, told Newsweek the record-breaking numbers suggest that Republicans have bought into early voting and mobilized GOP voters to vote by mail or by absentee ballots.

The next three counties with the highest early voting turnout, however, are all solidly Trump counties. Located just outside the Atlanta metro, Cherokee County went for Trump with 68.8 percent of the vote in 2020, Forsyth County with 65.8 percent and Hall County with 70.9 percent. The three counties cast a total of 36,960 ballots, just under 9 percent of all votes cast on Georgia's first day of early voting.

This morning on Mark Halpin’s 2 Way podcast he said Dems were excited about the high turnout but this was before the county numbers were released. Anyone here from Georgia able to read the tea leaves?

I was going to post this on Facebook, but they are changing the headline to: "Georgia counties give Harris promising signs on first day of early voting", yet nowhere in the article can I find any mention of that.

I didn't vote and don't intend to until Election Day.   I don't want to telegraph from early voting totals, how many votes the Dems will need to manufacture to cheat.

I hate to admit it, but I’m at that time of life that, if I don’t vote before Election Day, someone might be voting for Democrats under my name on that Tuesday. As I’m in a 80+ R county, that’s probably unlikely, but it’s nice to know my vote will be counted even if I’m no longer countable.

I’ve been thinking Trump wins GA by +2. GA is no longer a red state. About 41% of GA is black or Hispanic. Trump may peel off some of the black male vote, and may do well with Hispanics, but Dems have a huge natural voting base in GA.

Dems are always excited by early voting numbers and the media raves about the Dem ‘ground game’, but it’s early and there are millions of votes outstanding.

Exactly. It doesn’t really matter when or how we vote, computers are on all night, and they can dump groups of ghost ballots until they get what they want.

Hard to cypher the numbers. In the 2020 General Election 26% of the GA vote was mail-in. In 2022, 6% of the vote was mail-in. Most of the numbers for 2024 are in-person early voting and there’s no way to compare percentages to 2020 given the huge number of mail-in ballots in 2020.

yep. I’m just recalling in 2020 when Trump was leading and then around 3am, Biden caught him and passed him to win. People really shouldn’t expect anything different this election cycle

By the time they are done then they will probably have 1 Billion more votes than voters.

Even with early vote totals, the Dems still will not know how many Republicans will be showing up on Election Day.

“GA is no longer a red state.”

And therein lies the problem.

We lost Virginia.

North Carolina is purple to slightly red.

Georgia is now purplish.

Texas is becoming iffy.

Thanks to DeSantis, Florida has stabilized as a red state.

The GOP’s Sunbelt Strategy is coming close to breaking apart.

that is why I’m not getting my hopes up due to any poll. The dark powers want us to be over confident, so the crushing loss creates despair.
