~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: United States Coast Guard Yard, Maryland

MDcoastguardyard6

The United States Coast Guard Yard or just Coast Guard Yard is a United States Coast Guard operated shipyard located on Curtis Bay in northern Anne Arundel County, Maryland, just south of the Baltimore city limits.

It is the largest industrial facility in the Department of Homeland Security. It falls under the Coast Guard's Engineering and Logistics Command. It is the Coast Guard's sole shipbuilding and major repair facility, and part of the Coast Guard's core industrial base and fleet support operations.

MDcoastguardyard1

The Yard has designed, built, maintained and renovated Coast Guard, Navy, Army, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), state and local government, and foreign military vessels and systems for nearly 120 years.

In addition to the Yard’s role as a shipyard, at various points in history the Yard served as home to the Coast Guard Academy, a recruit training center, a technical training center, and the Coast Guard’s r esearch and development center. The Yard has assumed many roles, and continuously evolved with time to best suit the needs of the U.S. Coast Guard.

MDcoastguardyard4

The functions of the Yard’s tenant commands include warehousing, administrative, foreign military sales, front-line operations, command and control, contingency response, and logistics activities.

The Yard’s tenants include the Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC), Sector Maryland National Capital Region, Asset Project Office Cutter Transition Division, Station Curtis Bay, Aids to Navigation Team Curtis Bay, PRO Baltimore, C3CEN Electronic Repair Facility, Electronics Support Detachment Baltimore, and several other tenants.

MDcoastguardyard2

The Yard hosts the largest Inventory Control Point (warehousing operation) in the Department of Homeland Security, which serves the entire Coast Guard surface fleet, as well as the Coast Guard’s only U.S. Navy-certified heavy weapons overhaul facility.

In addition to permanent tenant activities, the Yard hosts an average of 8 visiting Coast Guard Cutters and other government agency vessels (along with their crews) at any time, and supports the renovation and transfer of vessels and weapons systems for foreign military sale. Thus, on average, the Yard hosts approximately a thousand visiting cutter crew members, other government agency crews, and foreign military crews per year.

Running for Jesus

Bible in a Year :

The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, . . . they will still bear fruit in old age.

Psalm 92:12-14

When people think about the 100-meter dash, current world-record holder Usain Bolt might come to mind. But we can’t forget about Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins. In 2021, Julia crossed the finish line before all other runners to win the 100-meter dash in the Louisiana Senior Games. Her time was a bit slower than Bolt’s 9.58 seconds—just over 60 seconds. But she was also 105 years old!

There’s a lot to like about a woman who’s still running sprints at her age. And there’s a lot to like about believers in Jesus who never stop running the race with Him as their goal (Hebrews 12:1-2). The psalmist says this about the faithful in the later stages of life: “The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, . . . they will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green” (92:12-14).

Older believers who follow this kind of standard can find further instruction in the apostle Paul's letter to Titus. Seasoned men are to be “sound in faith, in love and in endurance” (Titus 2:2), and senior women are “to teach what is good” (v. 3).

There’s no call for older believers to stop running the race. Maybe not the way Julia does on the track, but in ways that honor God as He provides the strength they need. Let’s all run the race to serve Him and others well.>

Reflect & Pray

What are some things you can do to reach others for Christ and help them grow in faith? How can you encourage other believers to serve as they can?

Dear Jesus, thank You for every day you give me. No matter my age, help me to strive to run the race for Your honor.

Hiya radu, wow, we're having more summer temps in October and it feels great although I do have to turn on the heat in the morning.

Typical stay-at-home weekend for me except for a Sunday drop-in visit to see Robin and the pups, nothing much else happening.

Hope you're doing OK.

Howdy, PRO!

You have summer again and it feels like Fall here this week. I was almost chilly while I mowed this afternoon. It was great after roasting while mowing yesterday. Supposed to dip into the upper 40s overnight and I’m not sure I’m ready for THAT just yet. LOL

All’s well enough here. Not much to get jazzed up about. I did go to a friend’s birthday party Sat. night and that was nice. Other than that, it’s just the same ol’ same ol’.

Hi there radu!

I have 10 small boxes left! WOOHOO! They are all kitchen boxes, and I already found my silverware and my pots and pans, so I don’t need much else.

So, I leave for my annual work trip to Oklahoma, I may just leave them ‘til I get back.

Hope you’re doing well!

The kitchen boxes always seem to be the last to finish with. You found the important stuff to get you by and that’s what counts.

Do you leave this week for OK? You’ll be busy but I’m sure you’ll have plenty of fun.

Howdy, Kathy.

Not too shabby a day up there today. Quite a bit of sunshine earlier but it’s starting to cloud up now. Kinda gloomy over your way but the sun found a hole to peek through to shine on the mountains to the north. That’s very pretty.

I hope there haven’t been any monkey wrenches thrown in the cogs today.
