“Saturday Night Live” joined in the Tim Walz pile-on this weekend, mocking the Minnesota governor’s disastrous debate performance.
The vice presidential debate won’t affect the election’s outcome very much, though. Indeed, it has mostly dropped from discussion owing to events at home and abroad.
But that doesn’t mean it won’t have lasting impact. JD Vance’s performance was so compelling that it has immediately marked him as the next potential great force in national politics.
Vance’s favorability rose more and his unfavorability dropped more among voters who watched the faceoff than Walz’s did.
That’s not what most pundits predicted.
Those who knew the Ohio senator only from his recent past thought he would be pugnacious and base-focused like Donald Trump.
Others who knew him only from the media-driven accounts of his off-the-cuff provocative statements expected him to be flippant, ignorant or primed to shock rather than persuade.
Those of us who knew him better, though, knew better.
We knew Vance is a sharply articulate and intelligent man who could think on his feet. We also knew he’s focused on average Americans, not just the Trumpian MAGA base.

JD Vance was on nearly every Sunday morning talkshow a few weeks ago. He was so impressive with his ability to address an attack question, pivot, and then speak on what he wanted to say for about two minutes that they will never invite him back again.
Trump followed by 8 years of Vance might just be enough to get this nation back on track.
It could be but not without serious backing from a clear majority of the sheeple. The revolution can’t come from the government to be real and complete. Not with a nation so clearly and completely divided.
He is Trump “Apprentice” in a very real way. He has 4 short years to learn from Trump, but it will take Trump to clean the stables. I love JD but I also know he can’t do this, it’s going to take Trump to face the storm that’s ahead of us.
Trump is the greatest president in modern American history. Nothing will change that.
Agreed. He has no successor. Trump is a one off.
JD Vance is ok. There is excessive adulation and fawning over JD here.
Ha, well these days finding a Republican that’s actually a conservative is rare, lol.
I agree.
Agreed.
Yes!
we know he can handle the leftist press
but can he handle the sh*t storm coming his way
when he is lead dog
I wish this statement was written earlier in the op-ed. I would have stopped reading it sooner.
Agreed he very well could be the next Reagan.
And like Reagan, he will receive attacks from both parties and they will probably be much worse.
Reagan was like voting for your grandfather.
Vance will be like nothing the Deep State has ever seen and they will do everything they can to destroy him.
Honestly, too early to say.
Enough with Reagan. Yes, he was a great president but it’s a much different time now.
The more I see of him, the more I like him.
Indeed. Reagan was great. I loved the man, and the ‘80s were the last really optimistic period for the country, as far as I’m concerned. BUT...
(1) Reagan was not a perfect president. 2 out of 3 of Reagan’s SCOTUS picks (O’Connor and Kennedy) were duds. Trump’s 3 picks overturned Roe vs. Wade. If Reagan had handled the SCOTUS picks better, Roe could have been jettisoned a generation earlier... and the overturn would have been more welcome then.
(2) Reagan was president during a time when the country had better people, on average. More families went to church. Fewer people used drugs. Hell, many of the guys who fought and won World War 2 in their 20s were then in the 55-65 age range and still pretty much still running things. Those “greatest generation” people are all gone now (with perhaps a handful hanging on in nursing homes). And what’s replaced them? Drugged-out, porn addicts who play video games and watch TikTok. Boys who think they’re girls. Girls who think they’re lesbians. Reagan ran a country in which a GOP nominee could win 49/50 states. That country is gone.
