All crew members rescued after New Zealand navy ship runs aground off Samoa coast, catches fire and sinks

A New Zealand Navy vessel has run aground in Samoa while surveying a reef.

Passengers and crew aboard a New Zealand navy ship have been dramatically rescued after their vessel ran aground off the coast of Samoa in the South Pacific, caught fire and sunk.

According to the NZ defence force, HMNZS Manawanui first got into trouble at about 6:45pm on Saturday while it was conducting a hydrographic survey just one nautical mile from the shore of the island country.

The exact cause of the grounding remains unknown, but it is understood the ship collided with the reef. The 75 crew members and passengers started to leave ship at about 7:50pm and get into lifeboats, with the defence force working with the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) to lead the rescue effort.

Other boats responded to provide help and a P-8A Poseidon from the Royal New Zealand Air Force was also deployed.

“Those on board the life boats and sea boats from HMNZS Manawanui were transferred to vessels that responded to the rescue call and were transported ashore,” the NZ defence force said in a statement.

The big swells and high winds reportedly added more complexity to the situation, with boats constantly being pushed towards the reefs.

“Our fire rescue team responded to the Manawanui vessel navy crew in distress, working from last night until this morning,” the post’s caption read.

“Fortunately, no one was heavily injured and no lives were lost. We're proud to say WE SAVED THEM.”

The NZ defence force said smoke was visible from the ship which was listing heavily on Sunday morning. At about 9:00am, it is believed the vessel capsized entirely and is now below the surface.

It's like no one has operated a ship before.

From Wikipedia: "On 9 December 2022, Commander Yvonne Gray took the command of the Manawanui. Gray, originally a teacher, commenced her naval career in the United Kingdom and moved to New Zealand in 2012."

It was an oceanographic survey ship.

"Yep, captain, that's a reef."

From Wikipedia: "Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was the ship's sponsor. At the time of commissioning it was intended that the ship would serve with the navy for 15 years."

Months... years... 15 something or other.

Now it can serve for centuries as an artificial reef next to the natural reef that the skipper crashed in to.

Ten or twenty years ago I wouldn’t have laughed about something like this. Now, I’m laughing my butt off like a lunatic. The who world has gone “woke insane” crazy and they’ve dragged me along with them.

Glad to hear that all the crew has been rescued.
Each one of those events presents it’s own kind of shock:
Ran aground, burst into flames. then begins to sink!
This is why most navies have frequent General Quarters Safety Drills. Or at least they did when I served, around 1982. In today’s “patty-cake” world, having mandatory drills may have been declared “Racist, or Colonist”.

I am baffled as to how a ship designed for mapping the sea floor and presumably packed with instruments do do so could unexpectedly hit a reef so hard as to sink.

LOL! America has become a country of real-life sitcoms. Everybody you see is doing something retarded and stupid to become a Tik Toke “rock star”.

Doubtless, they were counting melt-water due to “climate change” to float the ship over the reef. 😏

Sounds like we’ve identified the root cause of this sinking. Sadly the people on the boat likely don’t have a say in whether to serve under a DEI (other than leaving the military).

Passengers?

I wonder if New Zealand Navy calls anyone who is not crew a passenger. I suspect the "passengers" are naturalists who were part of the reef survey.

Doubtless, they were counting melt-water due to “climate change” to float the ship over the reef.

The polar ice caps may have melted so much from global warming that the skipper thought she could clear the reef.
