The check’s not in the mail.
Tax filers who opted to get their IRS refunds sent to their homes said their checks never arrived and were allegedly stolen as part of a massive fraud costing millions of dollars, according to a report.
More than 200 taxpayers who were expecting refund checks ranging from a few hundred dollars to as much as $500,000 have complained to Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) that they were victims of theft, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Malliotakis, who represents Staten Island, said the 218 cases that her office has fielded include checks totaling $3.8 million.
One of her constituents had to reissue their request to the IRS four times before receiving a refund check.
“People are getting these checks reissued and the reissued checks are stolen,” Malliotakis told the Journal.
Bennett Grimm, a spine surgeon based in Atlanta, told the Journal that he was notified by the IRS in February that he should expect to receive a refund check from his 2021 amended tax return in two to three weeks’ time.
Grimm said he was expecting a check for $96,000, which the IRS owed him after he sold his medical practice.
But by May, the check hadn’t arrived.
When his account requested a new check, it was stolen and deposited fraudulently, according to the Journal.
Grimm said he is now awaiting his third refund check.

No surprise...I had a credit card payment stolen out of a mailbox..I won’t send checks in the mail any longer
I wouldn’t be surprised if the thieves had IRS/USPS insider help.
But they think Vote By Mail is secure.
Mine never showed up.
If the refund is over $10K IRS will not do direct deposit, they will only send a check. Had a big issue with that twice while I was living in Thailand.
I never got a refund check. But then again I never gave the government an interest-free loan.
USPS insider is my guess. If this was all in one precinct it’s probably inside one post office or sorting center. I saw it happen years ago. Nothing of great value but we were sending packages out anywhere from 20-50 a day. We got some reports people received the package but it was sliced open and the envelope was delivered empty. After we got dozens of such reports from all over the country, we knew it had to be the local post office. We reported it and met with the deputy who basically admitted they had a bad apple in the sorting room but wouldn’t give me much detail only that they resolved the problem.
The entire federal government is compromised. Why not the postal service.
I never got the biden bucks check in the last round (which I never authorized or wanted) and now the irs claims that I owe taxes on money I never claimed on my taxes because their position is that I was sent the $$.
To be clear, no check was ever received. In fact, I’ve spent 0.00% of any zero, virus or biden checks. EVER.
If FReepers reading this spent theirs, I suggest remaining silent, even if it was spent on weaponry/materiel.
Still battling irs...
I will never direct deposit. The biggest thief is the IRS. I will never give them the information to make it easier to take money out of my account. I use a post office box to make it harder for private sector thieves.
The US has become a criminal’s paradise. They can commit crimes and when arrested in many of the no bail cities and states, walk out of confinement the same day on a promise to “be good”.
We always make sure we owe so refunds can’t be stolen by check or direct deposit and if someone tries to claim a refund off my return they get zero.
Gee, any of the thieves tracked down and arrested? I would imagine that banks had lots of information on their account holders which law enforcement could track down the thieves…. But then again, maybe not 🤔
Wonder who sent out the addresses where they went to?.
I'm surprised the IRS sends any checks out. The fed/gov stopped issuing checks to federal employees sometime around 1995. This was due to massive theft from Postal employees.
If you don't have direct deposit you don't get paid.
After running up a three-thousand-dollar amount. the account was defaulted,
leaving me to pay for the theft.
On disputing, it was reported the account was attributed to me "in error".
I'm still having issues with the collection agency.
I always make sure to owe a little money. Getting money back means you gave the swamp vultures an interest free loan during that tax year.
Ok so who’s saying the damn checks?
In today’s world you can NOT just go cash a check at a bank unless you have an account there. Every last check had to go through a Federal Reserve Approved Bank, if they didn’t exercise due diligence, like CHECKING IDENTIFICATION< then it is on them, NOT the Taxpayers. It is easy to Catch these people , they are ALL on videotape committing the act.
