End of an era as Britain’s last coal-fired power plant shuts down
The Guardian ^ | Sep 30 | Jillian Ambrose

Britain’s only remaining coal power plant at Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire will generate electricity for the last time on Monday after powering the UK for 57 years.

The power plant will come to the end of its life in line with the government’s world-leading policy to phase out coal power which was first signalled almost a decade ago.

The closure marks the end of Britain’s 142-year history of coal power use which began when the world’s first coal-fired power station, the Holborn Viaduct power station, began generating electricity in 1882.

The shutdown has been hailed by green campaigners as a major achievement for the government in reducing the UK’s carbon emissions, providing international climate leadership, and ensuring a “just transition” for staff in Britain’s coal industry.

Absolute madness.

We're so screwed if the lights go off there isn't much spare capacity as it is.

there isn’t much spare capacity as it is.

That would apply in spades, (no pun intended) to the good old USA.

I would love to be around when reality eventually arrives on our shores. I liken it all to basic ignorance of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

God giveth unlimited coal and man in ignorance, spits in his eye and says, I know better.

Coal power made up 80% of the UK’s electricity in the early 1980s, and 40% in 2012, before petering out in the last decade due to costly carbon taxes and the rise of cheaper renewables.

No way renewables are cheaper than coal. They are bringing on an off shore wind farm in New York that is going to be 400% the cost they are currently paying.

is Britain is trading North Sea oil for coal? sounds good except they seem to shoot themselves in the foot: “Sir Keir Starmer’s plans, announced nearly two months ago, would see the windfall tax on oil and gas profits be increased to a total of 78%...”.

In some countries they use their oil windfall to send checks to citizens or for other public good i.e in Norway

In the UK they p*ss it away it literally vanishes down a black hole like an extra few billion on some balance sheet.

It’s wrong....

The world has a 300 year supply of coal but now Cold dark winters are coming by the same people that killed the nuclear power industry and covered farm land with solar panels and windmills.

Average Energy Bill in the UK, gas and electric

1991 £847
1999 £666
2019 £1254
2024 £1640

Which means that people use less energy which means a lower standard of living while paying more. YAY Communism.

What is their substitute for coal? Knowing the left, they probably said electricity will replace coal.

Interesting that their last coal plant shuts down almost to the day as their last real steel furnace.

Britain may have led the world into the Industrial Revolution 3 centuries or so ago, but now they’re exiting and have decided to feudal, warring, society again.

The end-game of Universal Voting is now taking place.

Great Britain has huge coal reserves.
The whole industrial revolution was powered by coal.
I guess, they are going back to stone age.

Oh, no, even the stone age man used coal to warm himself, in places, where it was easy to get!

Deep State is still exporting huge amounts of our coal.

Guess who’s getting some of it...
