A homeowner’s plan to make his home greener by switching to a heat pump and installing solar panels in 2023 took an unexpected turn when his then insurance company, CAA, nearly cancelled his policy over the upgrades – eventually pulling coverage entirely due to the solar panels.
A CBC News report cited Adam Szabo as saying: “I was confused, of course. I’m like, ‘What do you mean?’ It just doesn’t make sense, right?”
Szabo’s desire to boost his property’s value, reduce environmental impact, and lower energy costs was overshadowed by insurance complications he didn’t foresee.

After replacing my roof with a 30 year warranty, I put up my own solar array going thru the permit process etc.
Except for a $7.49 a month “subscription” to the power company, I have no bill all year long.
I even supplement my Tesla S charging with about 35% coming from the solar on a yearly basis.
LiFePo4 battery backup bank and all the hot water I need.
Power out? So what? I have a completely transparent set/reset when power goes out and comes back. I don’t even notice when it happens until somebody calls me to ask if my power is out.
I am by no means a touchy feeley lib either. Trump 2024 !

Definitely the best option, no chance of fire, and prices are coming down. There is also no real need for the extra energy density of lithium ion batteries in a home installation.

I also hate how complicated cars are now.
The REAL problem is, if your house catches fire, the fire department won’t fight it because of the risk of electrocution. Can’t turn the electricity off in the daytime.

First time i heard that so i just did some research and looks like there is some truth to it. It’s routine for firemen to cut the electricity going into a house on fire, but they can’t usually do that with solar. And it’s 600 volts. Plus the added weight increases the chance of a roof collapse.

Anything attached to the roof other than the roofing material, shingles, steel, tile or whatnot, is a problem. Roofs need attention and maintenance none of which can be done with solar panels in place. And, a little roof system with all its hardware for a tiny footprint has no chance competing with a solar farm of a few hundred acres of panels long term and once the incentives are gone.
A relative friend home had hail damage in Minneapolis, Minn area this summer and he got a new roof after paying the deductible.
#22 My aunt & uncle’s skylight had water leaks less then 10 years after installation. This in sunny California where it rains 12” in a year and not a single storm like in Minnesota where I am from.
When I get it fixed (fortunately the damage was on an overhang) it will cost a bunch. Of course, it was the satellite company before the new one....so, the cost will be on me or maybe home insurance.

The solar panels add weight to the roof somewhere around 4 pounds a square foot. In a northern climate they may also cause more snow load to build. For newer homes this may not be problem, but you would be foolish not to do a structural analysis, especially on an older home, that may have had a second roof installed over the original.

There is no snow UNDER the panel so the with panel weight is about +1-3%. The issue is with the racking system and it’s load ratings (combined with the panel load rating). However that combined load is calculated with the truss roof structure, and the added connections from the solar racking system generally equals an increase in the truss load capacity.
Because Insurance companies are not stupid. They look at the risks and apply the proper premium for those risks or even cancel the policy. I have had my roof replaced twice in the last 17 years due to hail, I live in Texas. If I had a solar system installed on my roof the replacement costs would have been double or more. for my insurance company.
Oddly those solar panels are pretty damn strong strong to a small hail storm. A big storm wipes them out. If a hail storm damages your roof but the panel are okay one must still remove the solar panels and repair he roof and then install them again at great cost.
SOLAR PANELS SUCK. Nuclear power is great. Virtually zero CO2 emissions least the construction. Oddly CO2 is plant food. Nuclear waste from those plants is easily handled but politics will not allow this. Thus we have much nuclear waste in holding ponds that should be in deep salt strata in the earth.
