Hurricane Helene kills at least 44 and cuts a swath of destruction across the Southeast

Hurricane Helene left an enormous path of destruction across Florida and the southeastern U.S. on Friday, killing at least 44 people, snapping towering oaks like twigs and tearing apart homes as rescue crews launched desperate missions to save people from floodwaters.

Among those killed were three firefighters, a woman and her 1-month-old twins, and an 89-year-old woman whose house was struck by a falling tree. According to an Associated Press tally, the deaths occurred in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The Category 4 hurricane knocked out power to some hospitals in southern Georgia, and Gov. Brian Kemp said authorities had to use chainsaws to clear debris and open up roads. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph) when it made landfall late Thursday in a sparsely populated region in Florida’s rural Big Bend area, home to fishing villages and vacation hideaways where the state's panhandle and peninsula meet.

Moody’s Analytics said it expects $15 billion to $26 billion in property damage.

The wreckage extended hundreds of miles northward to northeast Tennessee, where a “ dangerous rescue situation ” by helicopter unfolded after 54 people were moved to the roof of the Unicoi County Hospital as water rapidly flooded the facility. Everyone was rescued and no one was left at the hospital as of late Friday afternoon, Ballad Health said.

In North Carolina, a lake featured in the movie “Dirty Dancing” overtopped a dam and surrounding neighborhoods were evacuated, although there were no immediate concerns it would fail. People also were evacuated from Newport, Tennessee, a city of about 7,000 people, amid concerns about a dam near there, although officials later said the structure had not failed.

Tornadoes hit some areas, including one in Nash County, North Carolina, that critically injured four people.

Curios to see which America wakes up today. Will it be the America which digs deep to help those who were left with nothing after this storm or will it be a selfish, mob that wakes up and looks to blame someone or something for this mess?

"Since 1851, there have been 962 hurricanes and 335 major hurricanes (Cat-3+ on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale) in the North Atlantic basin.

"Can you tell me which one of these was caused or made worse by a one part per 10,000 increase in atmospheric CO₂ concentration? 🤔

I’m more curious as to what made that single storm, lower left, break away and head West!

WTH is this?

“Climate change has exacerbated conditions that allow such storms to thrive, rapidly intensifying in warming waters and turning into powerful cyclones sometimes in a matter of hours.”

This paragraph is just jammed in the middle of the entire article. It’s an abrupt detour from the flow of previous paragraphs. And the paragraph that follows it goes on just as if it never happened. Plus, it is stated as an absolute fact with zero citations given.

What propagandistic BS!

It amazes and simultaneously pisses me off that vulnerable people don’t evacuate. Put rescuers in danger because you’re too stupid to do what is prudent.

So, if you build a crappy house it will get destroyed. Why would an insurance company do business there?
“Premiums Paid”, that’s why. They have a huge float of cash for a long time, then the big storm hits, they have to pay up and screech “But we can’t cover this much”.

Home owners complain about the cost, but make every inflated claim possible.

It’s a scam on both sides.

Insurance is a bet just as a bet on a football game. The bookie is the insurance company and your deductible is the vig. A smart bookie and knows they’ll have to pay at some point but make it as difficult as possible for you to collect.

I was stationed at Homestead AFB in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew swept across Dade County (Miami) .. The Eye was dead center on Homestead AFB..
That was, at one time, considered a Cat 5 (winds were at, or more than 200/mph), but then downgraded to Cat 4.. (BS)..)

Andrew wiped our Air Force Base, and the surrounding area.
Enough so that the USA government shut down our AFB, and it turned into a civilian base (link on my FR homepage)..

If I remember correctly, in 1992, to Dade county => Miami, not including the Air Force Base, over $21 Billion in damages. (Not sure how much that would be in today's $$)..

Not looking down on the situation now..
But, let's not forget.......
(got relocated to Intel base that was the worst base of my whole career 😤)

The siren song of Go West! has lured a select few brave souls for more than 150 years now.

It is a delusion that comes down upon Florida Man after 2-3 hurricane seasons...

When you see “climate change” in an article just substitute the word “Unicorns”.

Then the article makes more sense.

(Even the enlisted, if their barracks was 50 meters (about 54 yards) for the E-Club, they had to call a taxi to get back.. (no BS!).
O-club, a little more lenience...

Nobody is reporting on East Tennessee. There has been one dam breached and another is about to go, which will devastate the area and probably kill more people in Greeneville TN, where I lived for many years. My cousin and his family are trapped below the dam, as all the bridges, in every direction, is washed out.
