Keep your pets indoors, folks.

My cat has a bad habit of chewing off pieces of plastic and blocking his intestines requiring surgery when kept indoors (happened twice. Once with the tip of a chair leg, once with a lego tire). He is safer taking his chances with the human ferals.

I don’t even LIKE cats all that much, but I’ve almost always HAD cats for one reason or another.

That said, my current cats go in and out as they please, though we’re on a farm and miles away from a main road, anyway. One came home injured one night, but it was obviously a bite from another cat. (Easy enough fix; we always have animal meds on hand.)

When I lived in the Burbs, I had a cat that was declawed (he came to me that way!) and I’d put him out in the back yard on a harness/leash. He was STILL able to batch himself a big old Crow that was almost twice his size, even with no claws and on a leash. That was one determined cat! ;)
