Delaware Democratic Governor John Carney vetoed a bill Friday that would have legalized assisted suicide in the state.
Lawmakers passed HB 140 in June. The bill would have allowed a terminally ill adult to self-administer lethal drugs (assisted suicide) with the approval of two physicians or APRNs.
Carney released a statement following his veto, in which he called assisted death a “deeply personal issue” but said that he is “fundamentally opposed” to suicide.
“I still don’t believe a firm consensus has been reached on what is a very difficult issue – in Delaware or nationally,” he wrote. “Last year, the American Medical Association reaffirmed its view that physician-assisted suicide is ‘fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer.’ And although I understand not everyone shares my views, I am fundamentally and morally opposed to state law enabling someone, even under tragic and painful circumstances, to take their own life.”
The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington had previously expressed its opposition to the legislation.
“I want to express my sincere appreciation to Governor Carney for vetoing HB140 that would legalize physician-assisted suicide in Delaware,” Bishop William E. Koenig of the Diocese of Wilmington said following news of the veto. “I also want to thank the thousands of Catholics and others of good will who helped with their prayers and efforts to protect the elderly, ill and disabled of our community. All human life is created in the image and likeness of God and must be protected, especially the most vulnerable.”
The Patients Rights Action Fund, a disability advocacy group, had campaigned against the law, expressing its concern that the bill would negatively impact vulnerable people. The group, too, praised Carney’s veto, as did the Delaware Family Policy Council.
“THANK YOU, God!” Delaware Family Policy Council said in a Facebook post. “Thank you to all those who testified and wrote in and educated others on this legislation which would have changed the entire ethos of healthcare in Delaware forever! THIS IS A WIN!”
Maybe he wants an AMATEUR ASSISTED SUICIDE BILL..............
Look for what ever reason he vetoed it. Let’s all thank the LORD! and him too
Indeed. Perhaps he is on the road to repenting of the other evils the democRAT party supports.
When the choice is life or death . . .
Choose LIFE.
Most people who are terminal have access to heavy narcotic medication. If they want to off themselves, they have the means to do it, without it having to be codified. Good for this governor; I hope his motives are pure.
Must be an election year.
Jill Biden most disappointed
Ha! Was gonna say that!
“Most people who are terminal have access to heavy narcotic medication. If they want to off themselves, they have the means to do it, without it having to be codified.”
Thank you for pointing this out. I believe if a person is terminally ill, without hope of recovery in this life, their choices are between God and themselves-they should not be coerced/forced by others AT ALL-that is a crime, and should be punished as one-ulterior motives are almost always involved...
I have lost more than one person close to me who had a terminal illness to suicide-no assistance. I grieve their passing and miss them, but I believe God held them in His arms and gave them peace.
No one is privy to God’s plan for anyone-we don’t know when or how He intends to bring us to the next thing until He lets us know-not anyone else’s business, and they should not be involved-especially not a govt with ulterior motives. The gov of Delaware did the right thing...
Carney is term limited. Per Wikipedia he’s running for mayor-Wilmington. Motive in there?
Probably not, since Wilmington is largely left-leaning, and a major reason why Delaware remains a blue state. Maybe he actually has some sort of convictions regarding the sanctity of life, which would be at odds with belonging to the party of abortion under any circumstances.
Deleware is a strange State. Votes Blue, but no Sales Tax. It is red, except for the People’s Republic of Wilmington.
Two years ago, I was driving up the Eastern Shore heading to PA. Right at the Delaware state line on US 113 was a large Trump billboard. When I stopped for gas, every pump I saw had the Biden “I did that” stickers.
If you want to kill yourself you do not need to involve
