Mercury Morris, a running back and kick returner on the Miami Dolphins’ undefeated Super Bowl team in 1972, has died, according to a member of his family. He was 77.
The Miami Herald has confirmed Morris’ death through the Dolphins.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene ‘Mercury’ Morris, legendary Miami Dolphins running back and cherished member of the NFL family, at the age of 77,” his son GhostWridah, a Miami-based musical artist born Troy-Jeffery Morris, posted on X. “Known for his electrifying speed and dynamic play, Mercury was a cornerstone of the Dolphins’ historic 1972 undefeated season and a two-time Super Bowl champion. His talent and passion left an indelible mark on the sport, and his three Pro Bowl selections only solidified his place among football’s greats.

At least he didn’t betray the Dolphins like Csonka, Kiick and Warfield, when they went to the WFL.
Wow! Just this month, I began listing my 1973 Topps NFL cards on ebay, and saw his card just yesterday. Guess I’ll have to list his today. Probably have a few that are Mint, if anyone wants one..

Sad he won’t get to pop the champagne this year after the last unbeaten team falls.

Then there’s the 1982 team-perfect record. Jim Kiick and Larry Csonka. I remember it being said that those 13 yard gains by Kiick would have been 39 yarders by Morris.
Then there’s Don Shula. A run based team despite having Bob Greise and Paul Warfield on the team. Ten years later he goes to the Super Bowl with a passing attack with Dan Marino and 2 water-bug wr’s.
At least Morris lived 77 years. Good for him.
If it wasn’t for the goal posts being at the goal-line, the Redskins may have won that Super Bowl, but a sure TD pass doinked off the goal post.

They received and accepted what they perceived to be a better offer. You have never changed jobs for a better offer?
Anyone with a brain could have known that the WFL would fail.
Trump got into the USFL hoping he’d eventually get an NFL franchise out of it.
They made a bad business decision. I am not sure that warrants “betray”.
Kinda like what what Shula did to Baltimore?
Might that have been because of his choosing what he thought would be a more lucrative career that ultimately landed him in the Big House?
One of my best friends from FSU was best friends with Larry and Trudy Seiple. My first husband and I lived in Miami and used to get invited to parties at their condo.
We used to ride with about 15 people in their Motor home with Trudy down to the stadium and then after the game we would go stand outside the locker room to wait for Larry and walk with him out of the tunnel. It was fun but most of those players were total aholes. Mercury Morris was into coke, Manny Fernandez was stoned out of his mind most of the time on grass. I liked Nick Buonicontti. He was a nice guy. After a few times I’d had all the fun I could stand with football players. 😆
Larry Seiple made arguably the greatest play ever by a punter in that AFC Championship game against the Steelers.
He was a very good punter. Not sociable. We went bowling with them one time. You could hardly get him to talk.
Morris, Kick and Zonka all had a 1,000 yard+ season in 1972. Zonka carried more defensive players over goal lines and 1st down markers in one season than any running back of his time... maybe all time

I do not understand so-called, conservative people who seem to admire drug dealers. It makes no sense.
Never could stand that he was somehow made the unofficial spokesman for that ‘72 undefeated team; every time a team , like the ‘85 Bears for example, won the first 9,10 games of the year, and then lost, espn ,or other sports channels, would ALWAYS have him on, and he would just RUB IT IN. Why HIM? Why not DON SHULA? Bob Griese,Larry Cszonka, Earl Morral?
