The gunman who allegedly staked out former President Donald Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course with an SKS rifle was able to exploit a security hole that the Secret Service has known about for years.
News photographers — including those hired by The Post — have had no problem repeatedly securing spots around the perimeter of the course to snap pictures of Trump playing golf or driving around in a golf cart.
They have even taken images — which require a clear line of sight to the 45th president — unnoticed through the bushes with telephoto lenses. Some have gotten as close as 75 yards — without so much as a sideways glance from the Secret Service.
“They’re always amazed how close they can get to Trump and his entourage — it’s easy for them,” one photo agency source told The Post.
Photographers typically announce themselves to the Secret Service so that they are not mistaken for threats.
Authorities say Ryan Wesley Routh got within 300 to 500 yards of Trump after spending 12 hours in a makeshift sniper nest just outside the fence along Summit Boulevard, a busy thoroughfare of Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach.
The golf club — which Trump frequents when he is a staying at Mar-a-Lago — is a sprawling, wide-open expanse covering hundreds of acres, lined with dense tropical foliage and tree cover.
The source said photogs can snag pics of Trump “shockingly easily” at his West Palm Beach course, one noting “dozens” of covert gaps in the thick brush around the border.

This all gives me a very bad feeling…and I don’t get such things very often. And this one is bad, right down in the soul. Not even just for Trump’s safety but what this means about the evil ruling this country. to drive Trump into a heightened state of paranoia in order to MAKE him Hitlerian should he achieve office again.

Yes, exactly. It astounds me how many people are completely in the dark about just what we are facing, that a year from now our lives could be absolute hell on earth, so bad that people would be walking around in a daze completely shocked how bad, that everything that protects them as individuals will be gone, that they will be seen as nothing more than expendable trash to the government while being tortured by hearing the opioid drunk voice and cackling laugh of that bitch every day. 25 years ago I was homeless for 2 years. People have NO idea how much it sucks to be jobless, penniless with no place to stay. It’s like being in a prison from hell, all you can do is walk around, that’s it.
Cameras only work as well as the eyes that are on them.
In other words, if the agents on the ground aren’t checking the perimeter, the agents checking the cameras might not be either.
Let’s not forget, the secret service DID shoot at this guy BEFORE he got a chance to shoot at Trump. So I wouldn’t jump on board the conspiracy theory that the secret service wants him to get killed.
Motion detection cameras aren’t going to help much. You need perfect placement to avoid the hundreds of false motion warnings that will come from the environment. You can’t have a street or a pedestrian path in view, or you’ll constantly be getting motion hits. Birds and animals and even occasionally nearby insects set those off too.
FLIR or heat detection isn’t always going to work in Florida, particularly during the summer months when the ambient temperature isn’t not overly different than body temperatures.
They really should have more patrols there though. If this guy camped out there on the perimeter for a long period of time without getting noticed, that’s a big problem.
