From public overdoses to protests: Why NYers now seem to tolerate just about everything

Over Labor Day weekend, New York saw behavior that would have been unthinkable a decade ago, when I was a New York City Police Department counterterrorism analyst.

After the terror organization Hamas executed six hostages, including one American — thousands marched in support of the terrorists.

From behind keffiyehs, they disrupted the Labor Day Parade, flying the flags of Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and called for more violence against Americans and Jews. And yet they face no social condemnation.

Because they are subjugated by and urban political marchine and have no say if they want to earn a living in NYC. Urban political machines reward their friends and punish their enemies in the economics sphere. It is a case of ‘complain then starve.’

Is this really surprising for the jury pool in President Trump’s convictions? How many New Yorkers see in the terrorists kindred spirits — fellow travelors — who hate America, hate conservatives, hate President Trump?

I lived in NYC in the 1970s/80s. I saw bums openly urinating on subway platforms and feces smeared on subway seats. I saw the aftermath of the '77 riots.

I don't know if it's any worse these days. New Yorkers are used to this.

Exactly right. And the situation is unlikely to get better so its decision time for many residents.

Society is lacking in apathy... People just don’t give a flying f’k about anything anymore. It’s sad but true... Covid destroyed our enthusiasm for everything.

I don't know if it's any worse these days. New Yorkers are used to this.

The key to being "used to this" is, at some point decades ago, NY's trend-setters and cultural elites all adopted a very post-modern attitude: there's no ultimate values, no judgement, so whatever you do is just as valid as anything else."

It shows on the streets.

New Yorkers used to be more like Archie Bunker. They may have even been Democrats, but they were blue-collar and patriotic.

New York saw behavior that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

Absolutely wrong.

There has never been such a thing as “unthinkable behavior” in New York City in my lifetime.

It’s a collection of Cognitive Dissonance, at such a level that psychiatrists could only dream of.

Covid destroyed our enthusiasm for everything

That, and watching government employees at all levels not only get away with criminality and corruption but fund it (through NGOs and social justice groups).

Hell, the Dem candidate for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES promoted loud and proud bailing out rioters and looters who committed arson, thievery and violence that resulted in the destruction of people's livelihoods and businesses INCLUDING black-owned businesses.

I understand the despair and giving up attitude.
