The excuses are not supposed to make sense. They allow ABC and the news to have explanations now, which are really rationalizations, and set the narrative latter. ABC and the rest of the news gets to pretend they are fair and factual while showing they are taking sides. Later, the narrative becomes ABC ran a good and fair debate, Harris performed better than Trump, and Trump lied is treated as fact.

As long as it sounds good, the contradictions and admissions are in the open and ignored at the same time. It is a form of group think control, and gas lighting anyone who will not play along. The mainstream news acted the same way during 2020 election, by dismissing all the identical mathematical problems in the swing states vote counts. Now the news pretends the problems never happened and Trump lied.
