Expect to see more rats jumping from the sinking Russian ship in the next while.
Russia really doesn’t have a choice in this - Crimea may be emotionally important to Putin but it is strategically indefensible. Trying to keep it will bleed Russia dry.
ZEEPER FOLLIES PINGLIST!(((PING!)))
I’ll take “Things That Will Never Happen” for $1000, Alex.
Good luck with that BRICS application, Sultan.
Whether Erdogan is right or not is not the point. Erdogan never says anything unless there is some Turkish interest in it. Is he really trying to be an “ally” of Ukraine? No.
He also says he is joining BRICS
It wouldn’t surprise me if Pooty-Poot’s response to Sultan Erdogan was something along the lines of: “Absolutely. Just as soon as Turkey returns Constantinople and Smyrna to Greece.”
“Erdoğan added: “Our sincere wish is for the war to end with a fair and lasting peace based on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.”
I have a slightly different view.
Crimea is pretty self-contained (except it is short of fresh water).
I would be for Crimea to decide in an internationally-supervised election, to decide its fate (Russia or Ukraine), with those in the minority having the right to leave Crimea and relocate to their favored country. (The matter of water rights might be resolved prior to the vote should Crimea go with Russia.)
Same thing for the breakaway republics.
Then, if the breakaway republics go with Russia, the areas conquered by Russia in 2022 and not subsequently taken by Ukraine could have their own plebiscites. (But not if the breakaway republics go with Ukraine. We don’t want to have a checker board map.)
The reasons are both historical and pragmatic.
Historically, Crimea was a semi-autonomous oblast even when attached, for administration, to Ukraine SSR. Ditto, the Donbas region. It was transferred from Russia SSR to Ukraine SSR by Stalin.
The pragmatic reason is this: these places voted heavily for the Russophile candidate in Ukrainian elections. This was the purpose of attaching these places to Ukraine SSR in the first place (to increase Russian influence on Ukraine).
Getting rid of these places, or at least getting rid of their Russophile residents, shifts Ukraine from a small majority of ethnic Ukrainians to a large majority of ethnic Ukrainians, and ensure Ukraine’s western orientation. I call this, addition by subtraction.
Anyone who knows even a little about geo-political issues no damn well that Russia will not give up the Crimea without a bloody war. How much does Biden pay a scumbag such as yourself?
Keep dreaming.
Erdogan must be a “Zeeper”, as described by our troll friends.
You PINKY PROMISED us you were leaving...

This is a good example of why FR is dying
FR used to be fun, positive, something to look forward to Now it’s just rampant bullying and personal insults every day - and you do nothing about it
So good people quietly leave ... with their donations Look, it’s your site, if you want to turn Free Republic into “Free Russia”, just keep doing nothing
But then make sure you hit up the Russia cheerleaders for your donations (funny, we never see their names on the donor board)
Go ahead, flame me, I don’t care ... I’m on my way out of FR too, it’s not fun anymore

There is ZERO chance of Crimea ever being part of Ukraine against.
There is a much better chance of Ukraine no longer existing.
It's an Islamic thing. He sees a future for Crimea in a wider Islamic Turkish Republic.
Any mention of returning to Greece the half of Cyprus which Turkey annexed?
