'God of Chaos' asteroid Apophis could still hit Earth in 2029, study hints — but we won't know for 3 more years

There is a slim but overlooked risk that the "God of Chaos" asteroid Apophis could hit Earth as it makes a super close approach to our planet in 2029, a new study reveals. The odds of such a calamitous collision are more than one-in-a-billion — but we won't be able to rule it out for at least three more years.

Apophis is a peanut-shaped space rock spanning around 1,100 feet (340 meters) across, or around the same size as the Eiffel Tower. At this size, the chunky space rock is not hefty enough to be considered a "planet killer" asteroid but is big enough to wipe out a large city and trigger planet-wide climatic effects. The "potentially hazardous" object was discovered in 2004 and was named after Apep, the Egyptian serpent god of darkness and disorder, which has earned it the nickname "God of Chaos."

Not as soon as 2029, but soon enough.

"The odds of such a calamitous collision are more than one-in-a-billion"

That makes such a collision more probably than having an honest election in Michigan.

Wikipedia: “The closest known approach of Apophis occurs at April 13, 2029 21:46 UT, when Apophis will pass Earth closer than geosynchronous communication satellites, but will come no closer than 31,600 kilometres (19,600 mi) above Earth’s surface.”

At a bare minimum we might see geosynchronous satellites taken out.
THAT is rather close.

Considering the error rate in hurricane tracking forecast.on our own planet, how certain should we be with the predicted trajectory of this, with it’s millions of miles of orbit?

One article I read talked about oblong asteroids, like this one, and how they interact with the heat of the sun as they pass by it. Apparently as they tumble on their path, the hot side and the cold side tumbling and turning can impart at shift in trajectory and orbit. If so, hopefully this happens in our favor.

Even so, MARANATHA!

The asteroid which made this crater in Arizona has been estimated to have been about the size of a bus.

I pretty much assumed government was lying about it missing us, anyway. They are certainly governing as if they don't care what happens after the next five years.

follow-up observations revealed that the asteroid will sail safely past Earth at a distance of less than 20,000 miles

When they find one that's going to pass within 75 feet of the Earth, then I'll be concerned.

I’d be a hell of a lot more concerned if the government was saying that there was absolutely no chance earth would be hit.

“Please hit DC.”

By then they’ll be able to predict where it will hit. The swamp critters will relocate somewhere safe.
