The commander of U.S. Navy destroyer USS John McCain has been relieved of his duties months after the service branch faced ridicule on social media for posting a photo of him firing a rifle with its scope mounted backward.
Cmdr. Cameron Yaste was recently let go from his position "due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command the guided-missile destroyer," the Navy announced in a statement, without elaborating.
In April, the Navy posted an image of Yaste aiming the rifle with a backwards scope on its Instagram account with the caption, "From engaging in practice gun shoots, conducting maintenance, testing fuel purity and participating in sea and anchor details, the #USNavy is always ready to serve and protect," according to Stars and Stripes.

Who needs stand up comics when real life is hilarious.
Oftentimes the jokes write themselves
Hey, now! I bet he was just trying to make it harder to hit a target 6 inches away!
was i the only one looking for the Babylon Bee in the topic.
At this rate the BBee is going to go out of business because they can’t create satire crazier than reality.
According to Freeper experts that scope was correctly mounted.
The Navy ain't what it used to be.
Harsh punishment. If he had been female, everyone would have had a good chuckle and that would be it.
Ship’s Weapons Officer and Chief Gunnery Mate should be fired as well since once the Captain was handed the wrongly configured weapon under their leadership.
I’ve never been in the military, but even I would know immediately when a rifle scope is mounted backwards
One has to assume a Navy commander would know also.
Has this commander given his side of the story?
Maybe it was simply done as a joke or goof, for a funny photo he thought would be private?
I don’t think he was shooting with the scope on backwards.
It was used as a prop and the scene ended up sucking.
He should have had a man with experience rig that weapon.
I tend to concur.
If someone handed me a rifle like that, it might take me a second to figure out what is going on because I’d never anticipate that level of stupidity.
If true, I just betcha you are correct. Likely just a prop for a pose, and absolutely nothing to be canned for.
Do they train seamen to shoulder the buttstock that way? 5.56 doesn’t have a ton of kick, but that would make mincemeat of the front deltoid pretty quick.
Don’t forget the Gunners Mate who handed him the rifle. Although why a Naval Officer would see using a 223 rifle as a photo op is a mystery. Shouldn’t he be by the 5” gun?

Perhaps he was setup. The person rigging the weapon intended to show how incompetent the Commander was. When I was in Korea, out Bn XO was a real jerk. The Bn personnel clerk would ‘rearrange’ his load bearing equipment to make the XO look ridiculous. One side too long, one side to short, helmet cover on sideways etc.,
Yep. That is the only way I can see it. Someone meant to play a joke on the Captain. Hahahahaha. He might have even laughed when he found out.
But this is what our current Navy values...someone who doesn’t give negative PR.
God forbid we won’t have someone who can navigate without colliding with another vessel, or someone who can put ordinance on target and encourage good damage control.
