Not all jazz is like that. I learned to like some of it while in Japan in the 70's in coffee shops filled with albums. Some of the artist played beautiful melodies and soulfully, kind of got lost in them. Here's one with African tones I really like from Pharoah Sanders, very up tempo with layers of melodies and uplifting.

I think I know why I didn’t like jazz and why it puts me on edge.

When I hear music, I “see” it as printed music in my head at the same time — the measures, notes (of course), time signature, etc. If there’s a structure to jazz I’m not able to see it; I wouldn’t be able to write it down in dictation. It frustrates me, I guess.
