One of the more disappointing things about American politics is how much time is often spent debating policies that have no actual chance of ever being enacted in this country.
Such is the case with the recently “proposed” federal abortion ban that has apparently sent a large number of pro-life Republicans into a tizzy after Donald Trump and J.D. Vance have said they would not sign such a bill were it to be put on the desk of the president, and has them claiming they will not vote for the GOP ticket as a result.
Let's, however, look at this from a realistic angle.
In order for any bill limiting abortion to pass through Congress, whether it be a total ban or something along the lines of a requirement that only people over the age of 18 years old would be eligible to get an abortion, it would require 60 votes in the Senate to survive a filibuster.
But because we can safely assume that Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski would also vote against any such measures, that increases the number of Senate votes needed to 62. Currently the Republicans have 49 Senators, meaning that they would need to flip 13 Senate seats to achieve that number, assuming Collins and Murkowski were the only Republican holdouts, something I would not bet money on.
To put that in perspective, in an absolute best case dream scenario in the 2024 elections where Republicans were to flip every Democrat Senate seat in a somewhat competitive state, they would only pick up 9 seats, far short of the 13 needed to shepherd an abortion ban through Congress.
Not to mention that the way Senate elections are cycled it’s hard to see a scenario where there would ever be enough vulnerable seats

Watching King Solomon, I don't want to see the baby cut in two down the middle, which is what Solomon commanded, knowing it wouldn't be the outcome.
I am a 100% pro-life Catholic. I am voting for Trump because he delivered when all other politicians only talk. I believe we can reason with him after he is in office and move the pro-life discussion forward.
Trump went from being pro-life in 2016 & 2020 to pro-abortion in 2024, for political reasons.
You know he is not pro-abortion. But Harris will appreciate your stompy-foot vote.
Basing your vote on supporting something that has virtually no chance of happening is called “virtue signaling”. The virtue signaler’s vote is really only about themselves, not about actually affecting anything in the real world. It’s arguably narcissistic.
Trump did more than ANYone since Roe was enacted to advance the cause for life. He deserves every pro-lifer’s vote. No excuses.
It’s how Conservatives and Republicans typically shoot themselves in the foot
NO candidate is everything to everyone. Trump is as close to a terrific, accross the board leader as any of us will ever see in our lifetime.
He said very clearly that he wants abortion to be legal after 6 weeks, when there is a heartbeat. That means he supports abortion. It’s not complicated.
Yes. That's politics.
In 2016 he needed the social conservatives to come on board so he made them a promise. "Vote for me and I will put judges on the Supreme Court who will overturn Roe v. Wade." He kept this promise.
Now he needs suburban moms to come on board. And suburban moms love abortion. It is what it is.
You’re right. I people want a candidate who incessantly makes concessons to all and sundry, they need to join the DNC. Those guys stand for NOTHING
Trump put the question back where it should be: the states.
If you want certain kinds of abortion laws in your state, it’s now up to you to get busy and make it happen. Trump has already done his part, which was a YUGE part.
Trump is taking a serious risk here. Many Catholics are Republicans only because of the abortion issue. They like social spending, in line with papal preferences. If opposition to abortion is no longer part of the Republican platform, many will go with the party of social spending, i.e. not the GOP.
That is disingenuous. You may believe pro life is black & white. Not only is it not black and white but also President Trump has not changed. He was always for the exceptions. He committed to eliminate Roe V Wade and get the decision back to the states and he did.
There will never be a complete abortion ban in America. Federal dollars should not support abortion and we may be able to pass a limit on a cut off at so many weeks.
All of the talk about President Trump betraying pro life represents people who believe they should be able to dictate to all Americans. Even in countries that have total abortion bans the same # of abortions per thousand women are performed. What is the end game for people attacking the most pro life president we have had? To me it seems like a lack of reality testing, and biting of your nose to spite your face.
Your are an idiot. He kick the ugly procedure back to the States where it always should have been. He did the right thing and so did the Supremes.
“ And suburban moms love abortion. It is what it is.”
IF this is accurate, all it proves is that American suburban women are the stupidest human beings to ever walk on the face of the Earth.
Any nation where this is true needs to disappear from the face of the Earth, for the good of humanity.
what IS complicated is acting like “my way or the highway” in a country that is clearly divide on this issue while the side that is clearly for infanticide for any and every reason wins in the end because YOU DID NOTHING TO STOP THEM. amazing how smart people can be SO damned stupid.
Ignorant vs lying, always was, always is. The eternal see saw.
Trump is pro life anyway. He did more than every ass mixed Republican has done in 52 years.
They’re arguing over whether to kill the fetus/person conception to 6 weeks vs after what some md determines ‘viability’. Ask him the exact second ‘viability’ occurs
It’s all abortion
If the dems get in it will be pure communism. We’ll be paying for it, going to jail for disapproving it, participating in it if we’re in the medical field and liking it or else
