The False Promise of Ukraine’s Deep Strikes Into Russia
Foreign Affairs ^ | 8/28/24 | Stephen Biddle

Posted on 08/29/2024 9:25:05 AM PDT by hardspunned

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has provided Kyiv with extensive military aid. But that aid has long been subject to restrictions. Some have to do with the type of equipment provided, such as limits on transfers of long-range missiles or aircraft. Others constrain how U.S. weapons can be used. Washington has designed many of these restrictions to limit Ukraine’s ability to hit targets far behind the front, fearing that deep strikes would be unduly escalatory.

That position has been controversial. Both Ukrainian officials and outside critics argue that the Biden administration exaggerates the risk of Russian escalation, needlessly denying Kyiv critical military capabilities. Before making an assessment, it is important to consider just how militarily valuable deep strikes would be for Ukraine—how, if at all, the war’s prognosis would change if the United States were to lift its restrictions and Ukraine were to acquire the necessary capabilities. Only then would it be possible to judge whether the military benefits are worth the escalatory risk.

Think of it not as Tet but of the Doolittle raid.

Sure, it’s a big exaggeration. Ukes shooting US missiles into Moscow with US intel and US tech reps is no biggie at all.
Everyone knows if DC was getting hit by Russian or Iranian missiles launched by the Cuban military, DC would never go high order against Russia or Iran.

We are lead my lunatics who are mere shadows of the steadier hands from the cold war era.

Lunatics?!? How dare you! We are lucky to have great Biden people placed in charge of our nuclear triad.

In the former Soviet Union (and present PR China) one needed to read between the lines of state-controlled media, or in this case, read articles from highly-connected “think tanks” or academic groups, to understand what unspoken policy is.

Sadly, bloated, ideological and neo-marxist US Government now works the same way

In this case, “Foreign Affairs” is telling the world - Biden (or whoever is in charge) does not support US weapons being used in useless and escalatory attacks in the Russian interior.

Expect the Russians to arm anti-American groups the world over with cheap drones and missiles. The Persian Gulf and the Red Sea flight be closed to shipping for years.

No way - knowledgeable members of the 'Ukraine Fairy Tale Brigade' have assured us repeatedly that the US can keep escalating the conflict with zero consequences. Must be true, because why would they lie?
