Texas State Fair Attempts to Ban Guns

In 2002, the City of Dallas leased part of its property, about 77 acres, to a private entity, the State Fair of Texas, for 24 days each year to operate the State Fair. The State Fair allowed people with a handgun carry permit to carry on the fairgrounds. The 2002 lease has a duration of 25 years.

On October 14, 2023, a young man, 22-year-old Cameron Alexander Turner, fired 3 or 4 shots and wounded three people at the fair. Turner did not have a concealed carry permit.  Turner claimed self-defense. Video from the fair does not appear to support that claim. Turner was charged with three counts of aggravated assault and serious bodily injury.

From wfaa.com:

Jeff Cotner, the director of security for the fair says they still don’t know how Turner got that gun onto the fairgrounds.

“I’m little emotional, I’m sorry,” he told WFAA. “It was very traumatic on Saturday night.”

He says in the time since the shooting they’ve made some subtle changes – like new fences at the main entrance and increased security.

“We moved like 2 extra officers from one spot to another spot and we moved to police stand about 30 feet,” Cotner said.

According to fair officials, they are still allowing people to enter the fairgrounds with guns, as long as they have a concealed carry permit – something some fairgoers question.

According to fox4news.com, a grand jury formally indicted Turner on November 21, 2023, on three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The dentonrc.com showed Turner was also indicted with unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place.  On Jan 26, 2024, Bond

There has never been an incident at the Texas State Fair where a concealed handgun license holder has shot another person. So, when someone who is not licensed to conceal carry a handgun criminally shoots people at the fair, the response is to ban the carry by license holders!

This is Texas, man, don’t let the wussies take away the right to carry from those who have shown their reliability. Banning guns outright would just make the place into a regular shooting galley.

An occasional bad apple gets through. Pull them out of the barrel and prevent the spread of disorder and rot for everybody else.

The City of Dallas signed the contract, is is still binding.

True, but only until 2027. “The 2002 lease has a duration of 25 years.”

The timing of this shooting was very convenient for the gun grabbers; although they probably should have waited a bit closer to the deadline.

I would say the best solution would be to stop having such public events until the US reverses its descent into savagery. Maybe revisit the issue in 80-100 years.

I have been a fair attendee for over 2 decades. Not that they care about my small presence, but I sent them an email telling them that I will no longer attend as long as they take this stand. It is not so much the fair grounds itself, it is the neighborhoods around the fair you have to navigate from where you park. And just the principle.

Yep. I quit going to the Texas State Fair because of what is outside the fairgrounds. Same with Astros games.

Couple of years back the Astros had a game on Fathers Day which was also Juneteenth. It was to be a night game and the mayor was sponsoring a free rap concert in the park across from the stadium at the same time.

Oh HELL no.

What a stupid idea. I suppose you supported the evil Covid lockdowns too.

I can bring my gun if I register it and myself with the state, and provide proof of training? When do either of these become infringements?

You have to make changes when the miggies have taken over the state fair. They are a different dangerous breed of mammal.

Hopefully they won’t ban taking in nail clippers. It won’t be long before somebody will be checking your testicles like a tomato at H-E-B.

You do not need a CHL to carry a firearm in Texas. The open carry law went to effect in 2021.

The Perps demonstrate predictable markers 8 to 9 times out of 10 and have the guns illegally..too young or felons.

I’ll let you guess what the markers are.

PROFILE THEM
Stop.
Frisk.
Arrest.
Prosecute as adults.
5 Year lock-up.
Rinse repeat.

Very quickly the problem children are isolated and the cycle ends.

Current case law prohibits common sense profiling...BUT a Trump judge here to there could reverse that.

The open carry law went to effect in 2021.

The law also allows concealed carry without a permit.

Texas has been a constitutional carry state since 2021. No license is required to concealed carry. Here is a comprehensive guide to all things guns in Texas:

Bingo. Replace the Fair with a real life Neanderthal World where people can go and kill one another.
