2 Former Union Presidents Among 7 Indicted in Boilermaker Scheme

Yesterday, a federal grand jury in Kansas indicted seven individuals, including five current and former high-level officers of the Boilermakers Union for alleged roles in a $20 million embezzlement scheme that spanned 15 years.

The defendants, led by 71-year-old former union president Newton Jones and 76-year-old former secretary-treasurer William Creeden are charged with widespread embezzlement of union funds.

Over the last 15 years, the pair led a scheme that included more than $5 million in unnecessary luxury international travel and more than $2 million in salary and benefits to Kateryna Jones and Cullen Jones for no-show jobs. They weren't required to work and 32-year-old Kateryna Jones was paid two years of salary while living in Ukraine and dating Newton Jones. The union also paid for hundreds of fraudulent restaurant charges for the couple.

And the thing is that we all have known this type of corruption was going on. It has been happening in every trades union for decades. The corruption is practically a joke and a subject memes are made of each time the subject of unions is discussed. So, the question is why are the feds going after them know? Who did these people piss off?

A problem with unions also is seen in politics. There are no term limits.

A decent fellow gets elected. He wants to do good for his constituency. But as the years past, he starts to think more and more about himself. What can I do to advance my own bottom line?

I could never understand the beef with unions and their members. I worked with boilermakers (and pipefitters) who worked off their book (worked non union jobs) and still paid their dues on the off chance that something might come up when non union work was slow.
Work off the books and pay dues or starve waiting for work...while still having to pay dues.

I can proudly say the unions never had me on their plantation. Sucking up to or paying off the business agent with money or gifts so that I could get bumped up in the work rotation list wasn't my thing. Looking over your shoulder always looking for "BROTHERS" looking to turn you in to make you pay fines for working off book...a total racket in my opinion.
Not for me. I worked where, when and for whomever I wanted. Bust em all I say, but that's just me.
