Anti-gun Research Tries to Tie Deer Hunting to Crime
AmmoLand ^ | August 20, 2024 | Dean Weingarten

On August 14, 2024, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an article about research done exploring the relationship between the opening of deer hunting season and “shootings.” The article found that there was a significant increase in “shootings” in rural counties associated with the opening of deer season.

At first glance, the premise appears to be one of establishing by statistics of the obvious. Of course, there are more “shootings” when deer season opens. The entire point of deer season is to harvest deer by shooting them.

More shooting is done prior to deer season because many hunters use this time to ensure their firearms are functioning and are sighted in properly. They do this by shooting them at targets.

As a noted author, writer, publisher, and my friend of decades, Alan Korwin, has stated: Shooting is a sport. Murder is a crime. I would add that suicide is a volitional act.

“Shootings” has been put in quotes because the article does not define what they determine to be a “shooting.” An important part of any research is to define the terms you are using. It appears, by inference, that the article defines “shooting” as the same as the Gun Violence Archive because they rely extensively on the Gun Violence Archive for most of their data.

The Gun Violence Archives (GVA) collects data from a variety of public sources. They include most publicly recorded incidents where a firearm is fired and a human is injured or killed, although they include some reported instances where firearms were used defensively, and no one was injured or killed.  This use of the term “shooting” is designed to push people to associate shooting with illegitimate violence. Because the paper uses location data in its analysis and the GVA does not provide location

The paper notes most of the "shootings" involve handguns, not long guns. Exactly what the authors define as a "shooting" is not clear. Suicides are probably not included, but it is not clear if this is correct.

Many of the same people that operate a vehicle poor go deer hunting - correlation? Then there is the in-law factor.

I remember back when more hunters were in the woods during deer season. Opening day, you would hear shotguns firing almost non stop off in the distance

Like the studies trying to figure out why so many people die in Nursing Homes.

It's still like that here in central Texas.

Deer season you hear the rifles morning and evening and we just hope everyone is observing appropriate directional discipline - September 1st sounds like a war zone most years.

This sounds like the study that found men beat their girlfriends and wives more often during the superbowl.

Truth is, there never was a study. There never was any such evidence. It was made up and no reporter ever questioned it because of confirmation bias.

September 1st (or first weekend) is dove season in Texas. You are hearing shotguns.

October first weekend is bow only.
November is firearm season for whitetail.

Exotics (including hogs) is year round. Rarely heard gunshots.

I own several rifles, yet my favorite method is a bow.

A study you will never see...because it would be too inconvenient to democrat messaging.

the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an article about research done exploring the relationship between the opening of the border and “drug deaths.” The article found that there was a significant increase in “drug deaths” in the whole country associated with the opening of southern border.

Gun deaths may be too high, but, drug deaths, especially from Fentanyl, are many times higher than from guns. 100,000 deaths PER YEAR from drugs cannot be compared to the relatively small number of deaths from guns. Democrats do not want that inconvenient truth to be let out. Democrats don't have a problem with guns; they just want to disarm Americans, because, an armed citizenry cannot easily be overcome by a tyrannical government, which is what democrats ae after.

This is to justify gun grabbing from legal gun owners.

You can be sure if Harris and Walz are elected, they will go after the 2nd Amendment (Harris claims to be pro-2nd Amendment - anyone believe that?).

"We need the people in the United States Congress to have the courage to stand up to the gun lobbyists and take action around what is just reasonable...If Congress won't act on guns, I will, by executive action!"

-- Kamala Harris

"2016: Rated "A" by NRA; 2018: switched to "F" rating. (Aug 2024)."

And more bullets are fired during wartime than during peace time. Just another astonishing statistic put out by liberals.

Nothing new. The news media has been doing this ever since 1963 after JFK and later Bobby Kennedy were murdered.

Back then it was to connect crime to those “evil”- 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifles to get them banned, and Saturday Night Special handguns. They got the ban.
The anti hunting theme continued with various TV shows such as Revenge For A Rape in which Mike Connors kills several hunters who raped his wife in hunting season. Hunters were shown in the worst light possible. Spoiler Alert!: At the end of the program the rapists are captured. He killed the wrong men!

Then there was a vicious anti hunting TV special named THE GUNS OF AUTUMN.
It appears Guns of Autumn has been redubbed as the original narrator was some man who could barely talk.

https://vimeo.com/734135945

Here are some of the anti-gun shows after 1968.

Hawaii 5-0
The New People
Quinsy M.E. (We have to stop “IT” before “IT” kills again!) a reference to a pistol

Heck Ramsey
Streets of San Francisco
McCloud
A Gun In The House (TV movie)
Family Ties
All In The Family
Revenge for a Rape TV mvoie.
The Guns of Autumn TV special.
There were many, many more.

Who is selling weapons to deer. Are they getting them on the black market?
