I remember back when more hunters were in the woods during deer season. Opening day, you would hear shotguns firing almost non stop off in the distance

It's still like that here in central Texas.

Deer season you hear the rifles morning and evening and we just hope everyone is observing appropriate directional discipline - September 1st sounds like a war zone most years.

September 1st (or first weekend) is dove season in Texas. You are hearing shotguns.

October first weekend is bow only.
November is firearm season for whitetail.

Exotics (including hogs) is year round. Rarely heard gunshots.

I own several rifles, yet my favorite method is a bow.
