The Wyoming Legislature will look distinctly different when it convenes for its 68th session in January.
In Tuesday night’s Republican primary, longtime legislators went down left and right.
Most notable was House Speaker Albert Sommers, R-Pinedale, who lost his bid for Senate District 14 to Kemmerer resident Laura Taliaferro Pearson by 156 votes. Sommers had served in the Legislature since 2013.
The main beneficiary of the upheaval: The Wyoming Freedom Caucus, a conservative movement that has positioned itself farther right of more mainstream conservatives, including many incumbents its members have deemed to be part of the “establishment.”
All together, Cowboy State Daily has determined that the Freedom Caucus on Tuesday won the potential to gain 11 seats in House if candidates that align with the group win out in the November general election. This includes uncontested primary wins by Sheridan resident Laurie Bratten and Casper resident J.R. Riggins.
State Rep. Dan Zwonitzer, the second longest serving member of the Wyoming House, also lost his bid for reelection to an 11th term in the House to a Freedom Caucus candidate. Zwonitzer had been serving since 2004.
Other incumbents who lost on Tuesday in similar fashion included Reps. Tom Walters, R-Casper, and Ember Oakely, R-Riverton.

So new leadership coming to Wyoming!
Good news for Wyoming.
Wyoming doesn’t have many Democrats. Must be a great place to live!
It is a GREAT place to live, but please don't tell anyone (except conservatives ;^)!
I hope these are agenda 2025 folks. We can’t have that. I can list the agenda 2025 point that I don’t like.. who else can.
I’ve always wondered about living in Wyoming myself. But I don’t know the first thing about the state and what it’s like living there. I hear the weather can be rough, but that state has fascinated me over the years.
Wyoming - possible retirement location?
Probably not a possible retirement place for me, but Wyomingites would be wise to carefully screen people requesting residence in their beautiful state. Leftists destroy everything they touch, and like a plague of locusts, should be kept out.
I hear ya, they need to keep the poison out, that’s for sure. As for a retirement location, it’s tempting. I would love to visit out there if my health would allow it.
All of this is happening because Liz Cheney had to flex her muscles in an attempt to keep the country club Republicans in power.
The Cheneys basically uilt the Wyoming GOP, and the MAGA crowd made them pay.
WY is lovely. To see if you’ll like it there, go to the walk-in freezer of a restaurant and sit for a while with a fan running on you.
COWBOY BUMP!
Can’t wait to go back there.
I’ll sure Lizard is not happy.
That said, yeah, I hear ya. I've seen many videos on Wyoming and ALL OF THEM say that if you can't handle the cold and the wind, then WY isn't for you. Still, I'll bet it beats where I am now. I'd still like to visit if I was ever able to do so. All it would take at this point is a good running car.
