Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s running mate Nicole Shanahan said in an interview out Tuesday that the campaign is considering dropping its bid and joining forces with former President Trump as it weighs its options for the future.
Why it matters: The stunning admission from Shanahan comes as the longshot independent presidential ticket is losing money, facing legal challenges to its ballot access and has slowed its public schedule.
Driving the news: "There's two options that we're looking at and one is staying in, forming that new party, but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump," Shanahan said on the Impact Theory podcast.
"Or we walk away right now and join forces with Donald Trump ... and explain to our base why we're making this decision."
"Not an easy decision," she added.
State of play: The Kennedy campaign has drawn concern from both major parties about its possibility of playing a spoiler role in November.
But recent polling since Vice President Harris entered the presidential race shows that Kennedy may pose a greater risk to Trump in November.
Shanahan said in the interview the question is whether "the risk of a Harris-Walz presidency" is "worth us staying."
Between the lines: A leaked phone call during the Republican National Convention last month showed the former president saying he would "love" for Kennedy to "do something" with his campaign.
Kennedy apologized over the leaked video and reaffirmed his commitment to staying in the race.

She didn’t seem very pleased about Plan B, she’d love to “build a 3rd party” as she’s young enought to think it might work. Unfortunately she’d have trouble winning a state assembly seat in California where upspeak is considered a plus.
But she’s not really the decision-maker and to even be saying this tells me that Robert has already decided to throw in with Trump and is just waiting for the right moment.
That would be Yuge. A “Cabinet of Rivals” worked once, and Trump can buy a few boxes of matches and put RFK Jr. in charge of the FDA.
Shanahan is interesting——she became a billionaire through her divorce from Google
founder Sergey Brin. Buzz is the split was caused by her fling with Elon Musk. Both deny.
Shanahan talks about an abortion ban.
We knew from the beginning that the “Warp Speed” researchers were playing around with mRNA injections, and we know from the beginning that they were following a line of research with a really bad history.
This could be a head fake, partly to take the pressure off the RFK campaign, and partly to send a veiled message to the
Democrat (Socialist) party that there IS another way to go.
Should the Trump MAGA movement extend its coverage to include the RFK faction as part of its unified approach to governing a greater part of the population of the United States? It is a little hard to reconcile some of the differences in policy between MAGA and and the somewhat left of center thrust of most of what RFK Jr. stands for, but stranger bedfellows have occurred before in US political history.
Well, you may want to believe that President Trump knew that these vaccines would harm and kill many and had no problem with that, but I won’t believe it. We’re all entitled to think what we want.
The bigger point is that if he aligns with Trump he won't steal any Trump votes.
Other than his positions on vaccines, Kennedy is a nutjob. Trump doesn’t need his craziness.

How many oil wells did President Trump drill? How many barrels of petroleum did he refine? Zero, obviously ... but he still gets credit for low energy prices, and rightly so.
The Commander in Chief who takes credit when things go well is also the Commander in Chief who takes blame when things go badly.

I do think he got taken. In his urgency to save the country from complete economic crash, he was too trusting of Big Pharma. However, I am looking with 20/20 hindsight. Fortunately, he didn’t do the mandating and pushing that Biden did, as well as our idiot up here, Trudeau. Thankfully, I never bought into it for a minute, but then I’ve been an anti-vaxer for 38 years.

I saw her interview on Bongino’s Rumble. When she said that sentence, she was ready to cry, and maybe puke. I’d live to know what PDJT negotiated to get RFK to this place. Director Of NIH, maybe?

There are two main reasons why I don’t agree. First, Kennedy will steal zero democrat votes.

However, I would just have to ask, how many democrat votes would he have taken from the democrats when he was actually running and on the ballot?
How many is he actually going to get Trump if he is loosely associated with the campaign but not on the ballot?

In a sense, Kennedy has a very Trumpian attitude. He's practicing "the art of the deal," looking for the best deal.
