Ukraine’s Push Into Russia Met Early Success. Where Does It Go From Here?
The New York Times via Yahoo ^ | August 16th, 2024 | Kim Barker and Constant Méheut

KYIV, Ukraine — The success of Ukraine’s secret incursion into Russia is clear. Ukrainian forces pushed past two lines of Russian defenses in the southwestern region of Kursk and moved through Russian highways and villages with little resistance. Since the operation began 11 days ago, they have gone beyond Kursk to the neighboring region of Belgorod, putting other communities on edge and rattling Moscow.

The ultimate strategy and goals of the invasion, though, are still murky. Western allies, including the United States and Germany, say they are watching and monitoring the situation but letting Ukraine lead the way. Even the Ukrainian leadership seems surprised by the extent of the operation’s initial success, the first time that Russia, a nuclear power, has been invaded since World War II.

So now what?

Ukraine has several options.

None of those options are good.

They do not have the forces needed to secure their gains.

It was folly.

Maybe it'll get The New York Times building in NYC nuked dead on center.

Sounds like the situation Russia finds itself in with the invasion of Ukraine.

The strategy and goal was to embarrass Putin. The question is what now?

The answer is obvious, hold a referendum with the people of Kursk and ask them if they want to be part of Ukraine or Russia. If the answer is Ukraine then simply annex the territory. I’m actually halfway serious about this solution.

Embarrass Putin even more?

Going so deep into Russia is not just for embarrassment. It's more about attaining a much better bargaining position in case of peace talks.

Putin hasn't been able to stop the Ukes, and likely can't, not with the ill-equipped/ill-trained conscripts he's had to go to in order to keep from being embarrassed, not only in Ukraine, but inside Russia too.

The Ukrainians didn’t beat the Russians. The Russians gave up en masse. Watching the footage, the youngest, ill-trained Muscovite conscripts just gave right up. Russia has lost 1/2 its armor not just in the theatre of war but in total. They are rapidly running out of Soviet-era crap also. I see a military coup coming. Russia is losing its effectiveness in defending its borders. What happens when regions like Chechnya decide they want autonomy again? Or if a teetering China, on the verge of financial collapse decides to make a move to the East. Russia is a country addled on porn, cheap Vodka, and outrageous corruption. This is not your Great Grandfather’s Russia. This is more WW1 Russia. They are big talkers and bluffers but ultimately incompetent.

Except Russia is now making accelerated real gains in Donbas.

They don’t have to hold ground. They can cause trouble wherever the Russian defenses are weak.

Absolutely!

Russia no longer has the manpower to fight a w front war. All they can get now are conscripts who have to be rushed into and out of training, and who will be incapable of pushing back the Ukrainians, and they won't be able to push deeper into Ukraine, and they may not even be able to hold whatever gains they made in Ukraine.

Russia bit into a lot more than they can chew. Putin had better pull a magic trick out of his war hat, or he's going to be done, not only in Ukraine, but in Russia too.

Haven't they been doing that for 2 1/2 years now? How many more times will they be gaining accelerated real gains in Donbas?

On the other side, Ukraine has been making accelerated real gains in Kursk. Round and around they go.

—”The Russians gave up en masse.”

Russian conscripts quickly became chieu-hoi and flipped on the Kadyrovites. It turns out the Kadyrovites were using the conscripts for sex toys.

The Kadyrovites Tictoc army is like most things Russian, worm-eaten with corruption. Untrained and undisciplined.

That said, it is no surprise that Putin moneyed up his new best friend Kadyrov overlooking the rumors that Putin had his hand in the death of Kadyrov’s father.
Grozny had been an oil-rich province before Putin bombed the crap out of it.
But Putin needs his muzzie friends and will promise them anything. He will rebuild the Chechen oil industry just as soon as the special operation is completed.
