Columbia University President announces resignation following months of criticism

Columbia University President Dr. Minouche Shafik announced her resignation on Wednesday, following months of criticism for her handling of campus antisemitism.

"I write with sadness to tell you that I am stepping down as president of Columbia University effective August 14, 2024. I have had the honor and privilege to lead this incredible institution, and I believe that–working together–we have made progress in a number of important areas,” Shafik wrote in an email to students.

“However,” she continued, “it has also been a period of turmoil where it has been difficult to overcome divergent views across our community. This period has taken a considerable toll on my family, as it has for others in our community. Over the summer, I have been able to reflect and have decided that my moving on at this point would best enable Columbia to traverse the challenges ahead. I am making this announcement now so that new leadership can be in place before the new term begins."

Katrina Armstrong has been named interim president, according to Columbia's website.

Columbia University has seen an uptick in antisemitism on campus since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 and the war in Gaza which followed.

On April 30, at the request of university leaders, hundreds of officers with the New York Police Department stormed onto campus, gaining access to the building through a second-story window and making dozens of arrests of the pro-Palestinian Arab demonstrators who had taken over Hamilton Hall.

Before that, the Chabad rabbi of Columbia University and a group of Jewish students were forced to leave the university campus for their own safety during a pro-Hamas demonstration.

Last week, three Columbia University deans resigned from the school, after it was discovered that they had exchanged “very troubling” texts that “disturbingly touched...”.

Anyone to panders to *protesters* (anarchists by another name) doesn’t deserve the position they hold.

This whole Palestine crap needs to stop. We don’t run either country and cannot force action on others part, and shouldn’t be trying.

I’m fully behind the US supporting Israel, but no way should be be dictating their actions and policies.

They are their own sovereign nation not the 51st state.

Resignation is not enough.

Only seppuku will purge the stain.

It’s about oil. They shut down domestic production, so they have to come to OPEC hat in hand, and accept their terms, which includes a hand into college campuses and leaning on Israel.

Hire an Egyptian Muslim as president and you get exactly what you paid for. The entire Board of Directors needs to be fired before they hire another DEI person.

That would take a lot of pressure from the alumni. The Board of Directors will not fire itself. But if money dries up, they will fight among themselves like rats stuck in the same glue trap. Problem is, the alumni were “educated” at Columbia, too.

I am a Columbia alumnus and alumni donations including mine are drying up, including some of the major alumni. Columbia hired a DEI person and they got what they paid for.

Well, glad to hear that. Write nasty letters, too, explaining why you’re giving them bubkis.

I’m an Erie Community College alumni, and learned plenty just commuting to and from work on the A train, reading. Best part was, there was no professor standing over me, telling me what to think.

Kavanaugh and Trump had their families tolled considerably by these fascists swine, but they didn’t quit. They stand for something other than the intellectual fashion du jour.

Columbia University President Dr. Minouche Shafik showed her loyalty to the Islamic Umma and not any social or political grouping.

OK. So she stands for something, such as it is. That hardly counts as a qualification for presiding over an university of higher learning, though. But I’m sure she’d make a great president of AlAzhar.

“It’s about oil. They shut down domestic production, so...”

No it’s not and no they didn’t.

The US produces 12.9 million barrels of oil per day. More than any other country ...in history.

"...it has been difficult to overcome divergent views across our community..."

So... liberals can't really handle diversity, or what? Are they, or are they not, for diversity and inclusion?

Do they know?...

That is true to a point.

We could produce more, keystone pipeline, drilling and fracking bans across the country namely kali and NY

But it is interesting as well that the petro companies don’t want 40-50 a barrel oil prices as well so there is a limit to what is allowed to be produced by them as well

Even worse is the “green agenda” which does incredibly damaging stuff like shutting down “fossil fuel” power plants, pushes EV mandates as well as unviable replacements like solar and wind

All you need to know about latest “protests” is they neither know which river and sea they are chanting about and what it means as well as my favorite LGBTQXYZ’s for Palestine

“Panders”?

She’s an anti semite. I got that from a parent of a student who was inconvenienced and frightened. I’m sure this family never saw a loan advisor. Like $200 g cash. For this.

Tuition and fees $71,170
New student fees $675
Housing and food $17,580
Books, personal expenses and transportations $3,992
Total budget $93,417
