In a world reminiscent of chaotic '70s, 'Reagan' offers timely vision of hope, leadership

Out-of-control inflation, high energy prices, trouble in Eastern Europe, and a feckless foreign policy that results in Iran threatening Israel and our interests around the globe.

What has transpired in the last few years is eerily reminiscent of the problems the United States faced in the 1970s. Then, as now, America was looking for leadership in the face of a series of weak chief executives.

Then, out of the West rode Ronald Reagan, a two-term California governor, a conservative who was pilloried even by members of his own party as a warmonger and Neanderthal who supposedly didn’t understand the modern world.

What he did understand, however, was that big government had gotten out of hand and that government wasn’t the answer to our problems -- too often it was the problem. America wasn’t weak; we had just lost the will to build and project our strength.

IMO, no. While interest rates were high and inflation and unemployment was up, but we didn’t have the illegals and terrorist issues like today nor a decay of society as a whole. Just a few hippies and hard code criminals here and there. The world also respected and feared us.

In the 1970s -

The US budget deficit in the 1970s was about $50 billion a year.

The Democrat President was a born-again Chrisitan.

Most Democrats were anti-abortion.

And the only men in women’s sports were from the Soviet block countries.

No, today is worse for several big reasons. In the 1970s Universities and big business were not openly racist and communist. The young generation wanted a job, and a family and some fun in life. Abortion was something whispered about and looked down upon. We were the world’s biggest creditor nation, not the biggest debtor in all of human history. Music was great and there were still rock bands instead of overhyped autotuned individual singers with dance moves. Homosexuality was out there, but you could make fun of it and it was still weird. Trannies were basically unheard of.
Race relations were much better. The US military was unparalleled in power, respected, and we didn’t have pussies flying Tomcats. There were some democrats out there who did not hate America. On the 4th of July everybody had fun and had hot dogs and went to the game. Nobody hated George Washington or Christopher Columbus. Some incredible movies hit the screens. You could take two dollars and get a meal. The NFL was not full of criminals, celebrating faggotry and women, and it didn’t have the slightest desire to kneel for the national anthem. You could safely visit the Pyramids in Egypt, the Holy Lands, drive all around Mexico in peace, go absolutely anywhere in Germany or England or France. San Francisco was a beautiful quirky city. The US population was 225 million in 1979, now it’s 333 million. You could visit Yellowstone with some expectation of many moments of solitude...and feed the bears and sandwich. Basically, people were cool. Even the women were much hotter and slender and sexy. Then the world “elites” effed it up.

Today is bad... and it’s beyond repair.

National debt was 845 billion. I mean everything the US government owed from George Washington forward. We now exceed that amount in new debt every 100 days and owe 35 Trillion. Social Security wasn’t taxed, and every decent company had a pension fund that actually worked before they were looted and killed by Romney style hedge funds.

The world didn’t respect or fear us. Iran hostages. USSR running amok. 18% interest rates. Decimated rust belt. Jimmy Carter. The armed services riddled with illiterate dopers. We’d given up the nuke race. Navy seemingly in permanent decline.

Then came Reagan.

“”””The Democrat President was a born-again Chrisitan.”””””

Not really, and if most democrats were pro-life then who was being so effectively pro-abortion, by the way, Carter was pro-choice, like all democrats he was ‘’’personally opposed, but for its being safe and legal’’’, the same position of them all, just like Ted Kennedy.

Maybe, but times were better as far as daily living for me. I didn’t see all the same level of evil, liberalism, and downright stupidity I do today. We weren’t being invaded and usurped at every turn. Men were men and women were women less the .5% outliers and those that stayed hidden like they should.

You are recalling the Reagan era. The improvement started upon his election. Iran released the hostages. SDI, neutron bomb, tactical nukes in Europe,Grenada, plus tax cuts, deregulation, PATCO, “Mr. Gorbachev Tera down this wall”, huge defense build up, MX missles. 600 ship navy.
