Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that Russia has started a fire on the grounds of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest such facility in Europe.
It comes as the war between the two countries enters a new phase, with Ukraine occupying Russian territory for the first time last week as part of its retaliation against Russia’s full-scale invasion, which is now in its third year. Russia captured the plant, which is in Ukrainian territory, shortly after invading Ukraine in 2022. Its six nuclear reactors are in cold shutdown and no nuclear activity was recorded on Sunday, but the overall risk of nuclear meltdown remains elevated.
“Currently, radiation levels are within norm,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X which included a video. “As long as the Russian terrorists maintain control over the nuclear plant, the situation is not and cannot be normal.” “Since the first day of its seizure, Russia has been using the Zaporizhzhia NPP only to blackmail Ukraine, all of Europe, and the world,” he added. There is widespread concern about the safety of the plant, which is located on the southern bank of the Dnipro River around 50 kilometres southwest of Zaporizhzhia.
“Two years of war are weighing heavily on nuclear safety at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant,” Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in April, after Russia attacked the facility for the first time during the war.
“These reckless attacks must cease immediately.”
The IAEA on Sunday directed POLITICO to an X post in which it noted “strong dark smoke” coming from Zaporizhzhia plant on Sunday. It said it had been told there was a drone attack on one of the site’s cooling towers, adding: “No impact has been reported for nuclear safety.” …

Looks like black smoke out of one of the cooling towers
But I think the plant is shutdown?

Why would the Russians do that? Makes no sense whatsoever.
Reading comments from another thread, Russia is trying to scare the Ukes (divert attention). They stacked rubber tires in a cooling tower and lit it on fire. Lots of black smoke - looks back but supposedly not a big deal - towers are located away from the reactors
Now Putin wants to create nuclear disaster to really show the world how crazy he is and how much wacky the Russians are
He needs to practice on this plant in Ukraine before he blows the Russian Kursk plant so he can blame it on the well intentioned Ukrainian environmental activists executing a raid on the plant as we speak
Who destroyed the Nordstreams?
Russia Russia Russia </Hillary!™>
Well it certainly gave the coke head morbid midget Zelensky a good reason to run to the media and try to get WWIII in the works.
I think white smoke means we have a new Pope?
“Why would the Russians do that? Makes no sense whatsoever.”

Well, evidently, since Russia is dramatically failing to defend itself against the new Ukrainian invasion on Russian soil... the Kremlin is desperately trying a diversion.
At the same time they are also attempting to change the narrative, because right now the whole planet is talking about Russias’s utter weakness. It’s a very bad publicity for Putin’s so called “grip of power” of his own country. Many in his entourage want to take his place.
For the same reason they blew up the Nordstream pipeline instead of turning the valve off. (Sarcasm)
Clickbait BS.
Thank you - this could be a good thing, if the smoke changes color!
:^)
Send more money.
The orcs set fire to automobile tires in the cooling towers to make it look like a nuclear accident and spark panic.
Russians proving yet again that they really are the biggest assholes in the world.
the plant is in Russian hands. Not much burns inside a cooling tower unless you put some fuel in there. So how is Ukraine responsible for this fire? I’m just speculating but it looks like Russia is signaling that the plant in Kursk could go the wrong way.
Riiiiiggght. Sure they blew up their own leverage. Suuuuuurrrre.
Drink some more of that, whatever it is...
Almond flavored Kool aid? Hint of bitter.
Remember the joke about Jonestown......
The punch lines a killer!
