The two astronauts who have already been stuck in space for more than 60 days may have to wait until early 2025 before they can return to Earth — following a trip to the International Space Station that was supposed to last just eight days.
NASA also acknowledged that the astronauts, who arrived on the maiden voyage of the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, may have to be rescued by the rival SpaceX CrewDragon, though that vessel won’t be ready until February.
On Wednesday, NASA announced another delay in bringing home Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams during a news conference, with the agency saying it’s now looking more closely at an alternative plan utilizing SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission.
If tests in the coming weeks suggest that making the trip home on Starliner proves too risky, Steve Stich, NASA’s Commercial Crew Program manager, said Wilmore and Williams would have no choice but to hop on Crew-9’s return flight in February 2025.

“What a spectacular mess Boeing has created (yet again).”
If someone wanted to sabotage Boeing they could not dream up a scheme this crazy.
Anywhere along the line just one person with a brain would have ruined everything!
....just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale
A tale of a troubled ship...
That started from some launch pad
With a twisted ship
The crew was well trained,
Brave, and true
But the ships systems had not been tamed
They seemed a bit too new,
They seemed a bit too new...

LOL...I never saw that episode.
Why am I thinking about the movie “Gravity?”
“Article says they would return on the Dragon that is scheduled to take Crew 9 to the ISS, and that won’t occur until February 2025. “
We are getting the run-around.
Just two weeks ago NASA said there were no plans to use SpaceX.
BS. They had plans for August but NASA could not work out the details on their end.
“It was originally scheduled for Aug 18, we’ll see if this one works out.”
Yes. NASA wasn’t ready.
The Boeing Starliner was launched with known issues
I thought this was a very bad idea - you never go unless 100% mission capable
It was a typo. It’s an 8 month stay...
PAGING ELON MUSK————
That’s a lotta back pay…
They should’ve sent the board of directors up instead of the two astronauts.
Nah just undock the empty starliner and let it burn up on re-entry
Can’t just undock it, first Starliner doesn’t have the ability to remotely undock some genius didn’t install the software needed for that so someone currently has to be inside it to trigger the unlocking process and also fly it away because the same mental giant also didn’t put in autonomous navigation. NASA says it will be months until that software is ready and approved for use. So they can’t just dump it. The IDA ring on the Starliner is the active side of the port it must be the one to undock from the passive side which is connected to the ISS PMA module itself latched to the existing 95 stype Russian port the shuttles used. The Russian side has four ports but those only work with probe style ports from the 1960s era Soyuz. The American side has 4 more CBM ports one has a cargo module attached to it sent up last week by SpaceX three other are empty. They could send up a new PMA with a IDA ring on it to turn a CBM into IDA port allowing a third docking port otherwise the Boeing craft is blocking the only other port Dragon can use. Looks like nasa is going to either kick two off Crew 9 and fly them home in Feb when Crew 9 Dragon was gonna come home anyway or put the second row of seats into that Dragon and fly them home with the four already scheduled after they do their mission either way they have to custom build remotely space suits that interface with Dragon since NASA suits don’t work with Dragon seats or oxygen plugs. <<<this should be a standardized design requirement but we are talking about dotgov here. Looks like they are stuck until Crew 9 comes home enjoy the time in space y’all gonna be there a hot min.
“This reminds me of those movies “Gravity” and “Apollo 13”.”
Art imitating reality.
Unfortunately, this is reality imitating art.
The Recession should clear some of this C up
What’s that one from?
