Oklahoma schools in revolt over Bible mandate
The Hill via Yahoo ^ | August 4th, 2024 | Lexi Lonas

Educators in Oklahoma are refusing a state order to incorporate the Bible into their lesson plans, setting up an inevitable showdown with the start of the school year just weeks away.

Ryan Walters, the state superintendent of public instruction, last week released guidelines to schools for how they should be integrating the Bible into classrooms, saying educators who are against the initiative “will comply, and I will use every means to make sure of it.”

The message from some schools in the state: Bring it on.

“I suspect that the first thing that will happen is he will target a specific school district or multiple school districts who he believes are not complying with his directive, those school districts will then have to make a choice as to whether to bend [to] his whim or to sue,” said Rob Miller, superintendent of Bixby Public Schools.

“And I can tell you that if Bixby was one of those schools that he selected to come after, we would file a lawsuit,” Miller told The Hill.

Walters’s guidance, which follows a June announcement of mandatory biblical curricula for grades five through 12, says that lessons on the Christian text should emphasize its historical context, literary significance and artistic and musical influence. The guidance also says a physical copy of the book should be in every classroom, along with copies of the Ten Commandments, the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

It’s funny, the left pushes child sexualization, leftist policies, evolution, Marxism, secular humanism, anti-God rhetoric for the past 50 years in every school and college, then they freak out over the Bible being used in classrooms? I thought they were tolerant and all inclusive! BS!!! This is our heritage and culture and too bad if you don’t like it….

Thank you for referencing that article Mariner.

"Oklahoma schools in revolt over Bible mandate"

Oklahoma state government seems to be fighting family values with zero tolerance, extremist bills that arguably discourage voters from supporting conservative candidates. Insights welcome.

........hmmmm..........I’ve been around a long time and don’t remember a specific ruling by the SC on having a bible in school and/or the declaration of independence, the 10 commandments and the Constitution posted.

Perhaps you could provide us all a link to that ruling?

I would also remind you that baby killing was permitted by the SC for about 50 years too. Then they changed their mind. In the interim, 48 million babies were killed.

Teaching religious texts in schools is even perilous in private Christian schools.

Arguments break out, parents complain, meeting are called, insults are thrown about, and it can be over the tiniest disagreement in their version of evangelical Christianity.

And that’s just a small segment of overall Christianity where you’d think there’d be camaraderie.

I remember a huge blow up over once saved vs always saved.

And the sex education experiment at one of these schools was an absolute disaster.

Seen it many times.

Bringing it a public school where there are people from every belief system is foolish.

There are a lot of things I don't know about this. But there are a few things I wonder about.

Oklahoma (Oklahoma City in particular) has been (and most likely, still is) a hotbed of radical Islam, as weird as that sounds. Oklahoma? Yes, it is true.

If a word about Islam has been breathed in a single Oklahoma classroom, I fully support this measure.

From what I have seen over the years, Islam is fine to discuss officially or unofficially in public schools, even to the extent they have had school kids dress up in Islamic garb, do prayers to Mecca, and God knows what else.

This is what Oklahoma says about this effort:

"...Grade-level specific guidelines apply to students in fifth through 12th grades. They require students to analyze literary elements of biblical stories and to identify how those have impacted Western culture. For high school students, it entails assigned essays on the Bible’s role in literature, history and culture. Pieces of art and music inspired by the Bible are also required to be taught. Every classroom must also have a physical copy of the Bible, the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the Ten Commandments...

The impact of the Christian religion on this nation is undeniable. the Bible has been one of the most influential components in the development of Western culture as we know it.

Those four things mentioned, the Bible, the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Ten Commandments were crucial to the culture of this country. There was a reason until recently, that all oaths were taken on a Bible, with very few exceptions.

So, yes. I would like to know more about just what has been going on in Oklahoma schools. Did the inclusion of Islamic history in classrooms in Oklahoma have anything do do with this move by the Oklahoma government?
