Officers responding to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon found the man suffering from a gunshot wound inside the home, police spokesperson Heather Mitchell said.
Police said the intruder was carrying a 3-foot wooden stake and a rock when he entered an open slider door in a back bedroom. A woman was inside the room.
“The suspect threw a rock at a male resident of the home, striking him in the face,” Mitchell said in a statement. “The male resident retrieved a firearm and shot the suspect.”
The homeowner, a 54-year-old man, fired his Glock handgun three times, striking the intruder in the chest, she said.
Police and fire personnel tried to resuscitate the man, but he died before he could be taken to a hospital. The homeowner who fired the gun suffered injuries to his face and was treated at the scene, Mitchell said.

Glock defeats rock
The resident should never have given the perp enough opportunity to throw that rock.
Rock, paper, handgun
I support an extremely broad interpretation of self-defense in support of both life and property. Leave me alone, stay off my property, and don’t touch my stuff, and things will be OK.
I’d like that concept to be in the Constitution as the Third Amendment, right after the 2nd.
Hopefully, the "authorities" won't punish the homeowner, or attempt to by use of LawFare.
This is only a few miles from me. Generally not a bad area.
However, the drug addicted homeless and mentally unbalanced linger around, although nowhere near previous numbers. Most move along when pressed by local law enforcement as this is North County SD, and they aren’t tolerated for the most part.
Now with money tight and handouts drying up, some are getting desperate, probably like this psycho, and move to the eventual violent, thieving endgame. I expect to see more of this soon.
This is California, so I assume the homeowner may be facing charges?
“the intruder was carrying a 3-foot wooden stake and a rock”
All I want to know is, are the homeowners vampires? And didn’t he know you’re supposed to go in the day time?
He won’t do that again.
I wonder if it’s an illegal. I’ve read about a lot of illegal gangs breaking into homes.
Dwight Ivy lives down the street and was visiting a friend when he heard the commotion.
“It was just really crazy and unfortunate, but like we’ve had problems in the past where we’ve seen these people that are all on drugs, walking around the neighborhood, things like that. And finally one of them broke into the house and he paid the price," Ivy said.
"Thank god we have our Second Amendment you know, we have the right to bear arms and protect ourselves and that’s what that man did and I applaud him for that," Ivy said.
“San Diego Union Tribune requires registration.”
Opened for me w/o registering.
“Honey, hit me in the face with this rock!”
Oops. Closed after reading 3/4 of article.
Oceanside is where I acquired my first Glock knife around 1980/81 or so.
Do not take a rock to a Glock fight.
“This is California, so I assume the homeowner may be facing charges?”
Nope.
Vacationing in Oceanside right now. A beautiful condo with a beautiful ocean view right on Strand street. Yes, there are some seedy and drugged out individuals around. We haven’t had any instances this trip so far.
Glock verses rock, Glock undefeated
