Arizona toddler who died of heat exposure left in 108.9-degree car by video game-playing dad: cops

An Arizona toddler who died from heat exposure was left in a car that reached scorching temperatures of nearly 109 degrees — while her distracted dad allegedly played video games, authorities said.

Parker Scholtes, 2, was found dead in a Honda SUV parked outside her home in the Tucson suburb of Marana — where her father, Christopher Scholtes, left the tot to nap for more than three hours on July 9, according to police.

By the time first responders discovered the girl’s lifeless body, the temperature in the vehicle had soared to 108.9 degrees, according to an autopsy report released to the Arizona Republic Wednesday.

The toddler’s cause of death was officially found to be “environmental heat exposure” and the manner was listed as accidental, the paper reported.

Christopher Scholtes, 37— who was allegedly inside the home playing PlayStation video games while the girl died — was charged three days later with second-degree murder, authorities said.

You’re probably right. I live south of Marana, and 108.9 F would be an ordinary afternoon temperature in July. It would be much hotter in a closed car, as you say.

“but what in the world is a grown 37 year old man doing playing video games? “

It happens.

My wife’s daughter just separated from her husband of 22 years. The guy was addicted to on-line games.

More of us play games than you think. And now with YouTube and twitch, we make good money at it.

Stop staining us all because one asshole murdered his kid. I’ve been DEEP into it and never neglected my son.

The generalizations I see here about gamers are as stupid as the guy we’re reading wbout.

When someone shoots someone, blame the guy not the gun.

When a guy playing the game maybe as his head up his ass to the extent he kills someone, blame the game?

Sure, jan. Ok.

As heavy a gamer as I am, I never forgot my kid anywhere.

” I’ve been DEEP into it and never neglected my son.”

If you are deep into something that is time not spent with family.

I have little sympathy for this guy. “Scholtes’ two other daughters told police their dad sometimes left them alone in the car while he ‘got distracted by playing his game’...” His wife, from the hospital with the daughter, texted him, “I told you to stop leaving them in the car, how many times have I told you.” He should at least be charged with manslaughter. I don’t even get the point of leaving the kids in the car. Even if the two year old had fallen asleep in the car and the air conditioning functioning, I wouldn’t want the child to awaken and find herself alone.

I treat my dog better than some people treat their kids

Lots of people treat their pets better than their own kids.

I don't think he did this on purpose. It was gross negligence, complacency, and laziness.

And the damn heat. People make more mistakes when it's hot. At least I do.

Video Games are not much different then sitting there watching TV.

If he was watching TV, listening to music, or reading a book, I bet you wouldn’t care about that.

Point is, this guy killed his Child via Willful neglect, and like a good chunk of the Millennials, is a worthless piece of shit.

With the constant warnings about he heat, and the publicity each time this happens to a child, one would think parents would be more diligent about removing sleeping toddlers from their car seats upon arriving at home.

There is no excuse.

I once saw a news report on a similar death and the reporter said something along the lines of “to help remember your child, experts recommend putting something important in the back seat such as your phone or purse so you will see your child we you reach to retrieve it”. Excuse me! What is more important than your child!

37 and still so distracted by games to put that poor baby through such horror. Some countries would cut his hands off, just saying.

“Some of these instances are tragic accidents.
But some of these instances are not accidents.”

Interesting comment. When it’s way too late for an abortion, just murder the kid.

I would suggest putting this jerk in some overheated container that causes him to expire after a couple hours.

A good dad would give is life for his children.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...
And a government that fulfills its PRIMARY DUTY to protect the lives and property of all lawful citizens would do so in this instance by EXECUTING the killer.
