AUBURN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Bimbo Bakeries in Auburn is unexpectedly shutting its doors this fall, putting its 49 employees out of work, some of them who’ve worked there for decades.
The announcement came as a shock to Auburn’s mayor, who just received the news last week. “I just wish there had been at least some conversation beforehand to see if there was something we could do,” said Mayor Jimmy Giannettino.
There was no indication that Bimbo Bakeries wanted to leave the area prior to the company making the decision, making this news even more of a shock for the mayor and the community of Auburn.
“As far as we knew, they were doing pretty well,” said Giannettino. “They supplied products to local food restaurants in the Central New York area, and nobody had even reached out to us to let us know they were even considering this.”
Eventually, the mayor did get a call from the company’s attorney, telling him it was a done deal.
“While I did appreciate him calling, I let him know that I was dismayed that Bimbo didn’t at least give us an opportunity to intervene, to see if there was something we could do to prevent the closure of the factory,” said Giannettino.
The mayor recommends that employees displaced by the sudden closing contact Cayuga Works Career Center about job resources.
“It’s extremely significant,” said Giannettino. “It’s their jobs, it’s their livelihoods. Most of them have families. They are either going to have to start over. I do want them to know that there’s assistance in the community to help them.”
Bimbo Bakeries indicates that its leaving to support future growth in a statement sent by the company.
“We continuously review and adjust bakery assets and utilization to ensure optimal production. After careful analysis and consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close the Auburn, NY bakery this fall. We will transition production to bakeries in our network that are better equipped to support our future growth.”
“We remain grateful for our hardworking associates at the bakery and are committed to providing them with resources and support to ease their transitions.“
The company will be officially closing its doors this fall on September 6.

Maybe the NY government will begin making bread.
Mayor Jimmy Giannettino is a Democrat.
Eat it, Jimmy.

Seems to me the government is the root cause of so many businesses going closed so where was the conversation before this. When you have a company that has been in business this long with no warning this was going to happen shutting down when they have established they can operate under normal circumstances, then the only differing factor is an outside source. So this question is on the cusp of either rhetorical and just plain dishonest or stupid as they are the main outside source to help or hinder. Or at least they think they are. Stating the obvious.

Ummm, Jimmy, why don’t you reach down and locate your testicles, give them a pull to drop them out, and make a phone call to the moron in charge and tell her she’s an idiot.
or maybe just raise taxes for more bread. or tax the taxpayers bread...as in requiring the new taxes be in literal Bread. gluten free of course.
And circuses.
There’s going to be more of this. Companies will just say enough and close shop. Why bother with the liberal politicians and the people who supported it to tell them in advance?
I recently changed garbage companies because I was being massively overcharged by Waste Management. When I called them to tell them I was discontinuing their service, the customer representative asked me why. I explained the cost situation. She asked me if I would consider staying with them for a lower price. That really made me angry. If you can charge a lower price for service, why have you been gouging me all this time?
When somebody quits you, it’s too late to try to make it better.
You said it all, FRiend bump!
This seems similar to a divorce. A divorce is seldom because of one event. It’s usually the result of dozens or hundreds of smaller divorcements. Finally, they lead to a crescendo and the offending husband or wife is stunned because they had no idea something was wrong. Of course, the wife or husband has said something all along but was ignored. And, indeed, one mayor or civic leader couldn’t begin to address all of the small taxes, regulations and money-grabs that led to this event.

If so, each loaf would probably cost $15 to make. And that’s because politicians, consultants, etc. will all want a piece of the action. Plus all energy used in the factories must be “green”. And green energy ain’t cheap.
Then sell each loaf for $1. Anything more would not be fair and equitable.

No, they're the parent company to brands like Thomas English Muffins and Entenmann's. However, they sound like a nice, woke company, so I wonder why they're leaving.
