‘Self-managed’ abortions up 40 percent since Dobbs decision, study finds

Significantly more women chose to end pregnancies themselves — using unsupervised and potentially dangerous at-home methods — in the year following the Supreme Court’s abolition of federal protections for abortion, a new study has found.

An estimated 3.4 percent of all women of reproductive age reported having tried some form of at-home abortion in the year following the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, according to findings published on Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open.

That’s up from 2.4 percent of all women the year before — a trend that researchers projected would keep growing.

“As barriers to facility-based abortion grow, [self managed abortion] may increasingly become an individual’s only or preferred option to end a pregnancy,” the study authors wrote.

In a worrying trend, about three-quarters of women who tried to perform at-home abortions didn’t use the World Health Organization-recommended pills misoprostol or mifepristone.

I knew that the blow back from repealing Roe would be vicious and demonic, but it had to be done regardless.

Had Roe been repealed within a year or so of the decision in the mid 1970's, society would not have yet become so inured to this practice, and we would be in a much different place now.

Sane, life-affirming states are going to have a lot of work to do to safeguard the unborn in their jurisdictions, such as restricting importation of abortifacient drugs for self administration. There is NOTHING "freedom robbing" about that, in case you leftertarian types object.

Have we reached the point yet where we can actually question how stupid women must be to get themselves so needing of killing the pre-born?

Honestly, do they not know that screwing around will get you pregnant? Are they stupid, or just completely without control of themselves? If they have no control over themselves, then I do believe that birth control has been around for some time. So what is the problem with so many women?

Repealing Roe was just constitutionally necessary. Even Ginsberg said it was a bad law for that reason.

Let the states make whatever laws they need to. What is hard for me to comprehend is how the left knows that women are one issue voters: Can I kill my child at will as long is it is north of the labia?

To me, that is the real measure of how far gone we are as a country. We will never get 51% percent of the population back to some semblance of accountable.

Baloney. Most women would be scared to death to try something on themselves and even more women wouldn’t even know how or what to use.
This is another bash of the Supreme Court.

MSM is going to do all can to make abortion not just the main issue but the only issue. They will bury the fact that Trump is where most Americans are on it. Harris is the extreme.

So am I but that's how they motivate an otherwise disinterested voting bloc to vote.

I'm sure you've noticed that they NEVER EVER EVER talk about prevention or contraception, only after the fact abortion.

Why, you may ask? If everyone is on birth control they have no need of abortion. Abortion is what makes them money which they then can donate to Democrats who get in office and grant funding to PP who donate back to Democrats who then ...

You get the picture. This isn't about women's bodies. Never was. It's about money for the DNC.

“The most common methods for SMA included herbs (29.8% in 2021 and 25.9% in 2023), emergency contraception before confirming the pregnancy (with another method) (28.6% in 2021 and 29.7% in 2023), hitting themselves in the stomach (22.7% in 2021 and 21.6% in 2023), and alcohol or other substances (17.9% in 2021 and 18.6% in 2023). Fewer reported using misoprostol (13.7% in 2021 and 15.7% in 2023) and mifepristone (6.6% in 2021 and 11.0% in 2023).”

“Almost 1 in 5 participants reported that the clinic was too expensive (16.7% in 2021 and 18.2% in 2023)”

You’ll be hearing a lot about this.

I suspect a lot of females of reproductive age don’t know about fetal alcohol syndrome.

I suspect such attempts are criminal. Only state licensed ‘professionals’ get to kill babies with impunity.

” If everyone is on birth control they have no need of abortion.”

*********************************************************

Combined oral contraceptives—Also called “the pill,” combined oral contraceptives contain the hormones estrogen and progestin. It is prescribed by a doctor. A pill is taken at the same time each day. If you are older than 35 years and smoke, have a history of blood clots or breast cancer, your doctor may advise you not to take the pill. Typical use failure rate: 7%.

Progestin only pill—Unlike the combined pill, the progestin-only pill (sometimes called the mini-pill) only has one hormone, progestin, instead of both estrogen and progestin. It is prescribed by a doctor. It is taken at the same time each day. It may be a good option for women who can’t take estrogen. Typical use failure rate: 7%.

Implant—The implant is a single, thin rod that is inserted under the skin of a women’s upper arm. The rod contains a progestin that is released into the body over 3 years. Typical use failure rate: 0.1%.

Levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG IUD)—The LNG IUD is a small T-shaped device like the Copper T IUD. It is placed inside the uterus by a doctor. It releases a small amount of progestin each day to keep you from getting pregnant. The LNG IUD stays in your uterus for up to 3 to 8 years, depending on the device. Typical use failure rate: 0.1-0.4%.

I suspect most abortions are the end result of not taking birth control pills on time.

Do they pretend it has nothing to do with the abortion pill being available at pharmacies? If I recall, that started in January of 2023. Not all states but many. So women can take them at home instead of at a doctor’s office as it was before 2023. Like any drug, I’m sure there is a black market for it. I don’t know if it really has much to do with the Dobbs decision vs the wider availability of that pill.

Correct. Or as Rush said regarding all the blowback the Dims did against Trump: this is what happens when you fight back. This is what cleaning house looks like because the left won't go down easily.
