Harris' shift from tough-on-crime prosecutor to social justice advocate faces scrutiny from conservative group

Vice President Kamala Harris' checkered prosecution record during her tenure as California attorney general is resurfacing as her bid for the White House heats up. From locking up parents whose children had chronically missed school to supporting a bail fund that let violent Black Lives Matter rioters out of jail in 2020, Harris' approach to criminal justice is facing fresh scrutiny.

America First Legal (AFL), a nonprofit conservative legal watchdog group, launched seven investigations into Harris' prosecutorial background on Thursday afternoon,...

Through public records requests to the California Attorney General's Office, AFL is investigating Harris for failure to comply with federal donor privacy laws; failure to enforce federal immigration laws; failure to pursue equal justice; failure to disclose conflicts of interest; failure to address evidence of misconduct; the nature of probes by the California Fair Practices Commission; and potential cover-up of misconduct evidence.

Excerpt: As Attorney General, Harris pushed for and saw the passage of a statewide anti-truancy bill that exported some of her thinking to California as a whole.

Under that law, some parents were arrested by local law enforcement and faced harsher penalties, including Cheree Peoples, who was very publicly “perp-walked” during a 2013 arrest in Orange County in Southern California. Peoples said her daughter’s school absences were due to hospitalizations for a chronic illness.

Harris has defended her focus on truancy broadly but expressed regret for how some cases were handled after the passage of the statewide law.

A staggering number of U.S. voters think that Vice President Kamala Harris was at least partially involved in covering-up the extent of President Joe Biden’s mental decline. Biden, 81, ended his reelection bid last weekend amid a flurry of calls for him to step aside after a disastrous debate performance and ensuing weeks of flubs and missteps from which he could not recover. Harris immediately stepped in as his replacement and took over Biden’s campaign. Two days later, the VP earned enough delegates to become the Democrat’s presumed 2024 nominee.

But a whopping 92 percent of registered voters in a new YouGov/Times of London poll say that Harris was behind the efforts to conceal Biden’s failing cognitive fitness and physical well-being as his staff maintained to press and the public that the president was fit for a second term. The survey of 1,170 voters taken July 22 and 23 asked whether they believed there was an effort to shield Biden’s mental health from the public and who was responsible for the cover-up.

Fifty-four percent of respondents said there was a cover-up and 30 percent said they don’t believe there was one. Sixteen percent aren’t sure. The switch-up in the 2024 election has left many with questions over whether there was a plot to keep Biden’s cognitive health under wraps and who plotted to keep secret his declining health.

And 30 percent of those surveyed think that Biden should step down before the end of his term and let Harris take over now. Of those who do believe there was a cover-up, a resounding 68 percent think that Biden’s No. 2 was ‘a great deal’ involved in concealing his true fitness. Seven percent said Harris was ‘a little’ to blame, while 17 percent feel she was ‘somewhat’ responsible.

During his most recent rally, Trump hammered Harris's record on financially supporting groups that provide bail to release violent BLM and antifa criminals back onto the streets:

Vice President Kamala Harris has actively fundraised for the Minnesota Freedom Fund (MFF), which bailed out serious criminals from jail and released them back onto the streets.
Harris’s support for the MFF is still live on Act Blue as of today, encouraging donations for the bail fund with a photo of her face. Her Twitter and Facebook pages also share the link... The MFF bailed out six men accused of domestic violence, a man accused of sexually penetrating a child, and a man who allegedly stomped on his victim’s head.
