Brighton (Leftist Upstate NY suburb) Landlord Tenant Project aims to stabilize renters, prevent homelessness

BRIGHTON, N.Y. — A new program in Brighton hopes to help stabilize folks in poverty. The Brighton Landlord Tenant Project will connect pro-bono lawyers with people facing evictions. Forty-two percent of people in Brighton are renters. Town Supervisor Bill Moehle says the goal here is to tackle systemic poverty and stop people who are in a bad situation from making it worse.

This program is run by the local nonprofit Just Cause. When you show up in Brighton Town Court a volunteer lawyer will be there, offering to help you with your eviction case.

Most of the time they don’t fight to keep you in that home forever. Instead, they come to settlements with your landlord’s lawyers to stop the eviction and give you time to figure out a new place to live.

The program will also screen tenants for social services like rental assistance, or SNAP benefits. The goal with all this is stabilization.

Moehle says before he was town supervisor, he practiced law and volunteered with Just Cause for several cases.

“A courtroom is an intimidating place, there’s shame involved. So having an attorney there really helps ease some of that burden that otherwise you know the person whose name is on the lease is facing by themselves,” said Bill Moehle, Brighton Town Supervisor.

“Even if we aren’t able to prevent someone from having to move, we are preventing someone from having an eviction on their record so that they will not be able to find another place to live and we are also helping people to stay where they are as long as possible,” said Tina Foster, executive director of Just Cause.

Moehle says this program doesn’t cost Brighton taxpayers anything, because the lawyers volunteer their time. Just Cause claims it can even save governments money in the long run because it helps prevent homelessness.

Other towns have similar programs.

Just Cause runs the program in Irondequoit, too. That’s been going on for several years. The program wants to expand to all towns but it’s just a matter of getting the staffing and grants to do so.”

“Moehle says this program doesn’t cost Brighton taxpayers anything, because the lawyers volunteer their time.”

Bullshit.....the idea that stuff is free is one of the greatest falsehoods ever perpetrated......right behind all White Americans are inherently racist and covid shots are safe and effective.

making it more expensive to be a landlord, will only drive up rents more.

*sigh*

If leftists only understood BASIC economics, the country would be so much better off.

It is not that they don’t understand basic economics it is that they don’t want to understand basic economics.

Basic economics goes against the narrative.

Cuomo and Tish James have already sealed eviction records so that landlords can’t look up an eviction on a prospective tenant

Rent control causes homelessness. Period. It is merely a transfer of wealth from property owners to renters. This discourages people from becoming property owners and encourages people to become renters.

It simultaneously increases demand and reduces supply.

There could hardly be a more hairbrained scheme, outside of “quantitative easing” or Keynesian “economics”.

It is said that economists only know how to make two things: surpluses and shortages. To create a surplus control the price above the market price. To create a shortage, control price below market price. As in rent control. Works every time it’s tried.

Grants grants and more grants! Husband just got back from a job proposal that would be paid by a local charity not for profit organization. The case of homeowners that should have remained renters.

Government program shoehorned them into this huge 1800s house with an oil boiler that they hadn’t serviced since they moved in in 2018. Everything in the house is destroyed and by the way they are leftists.
Husband turned down the job.

Politicians are not elected by maximizing happiness or economic output, but telling voters what they want to hear.

Politicians may advocate polices that will lead poor economic and social outcomes, but in the short term may help incumbents by alleviating the consequences of antisocial and diseconomical behavior. See also: Curley Effect.

Brighton has a lot of rich liberals. I drove through there a few days ago and still see BLM support signs in front yards of their manicured lawns.

F-ing over landlords with even MORE regulations that give renters free residence is simply going to greatly reduce the number of units available for rent as landlords say F-it, i’m outta here ...

Yeah we are a thread away from selling our 11 doors. If “Good Cause” eviction legislation ™, which was adopted universally downstate in this year’s “budget” and can be opted into upstate (and it’s spreading like wildfire upstate) we are out.

Brighton used to be a nice suburb of Rochester, but like every other suburb of Rochester, it was invaded, and turned into a ghetto.
