Los Angeles County’s Board of Supervisors unanimously voted Tuesday in favor of creating a plan to provide free attorneys to low income renters facing eviction.
The policy — which still needs a final vote before it is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2025 — would be the first of its kind in Southern California.
It comes at a time when lapsed pandemic renter protections have caused a spike in eviction filings leading to thousands losing housing.
“Housing is a fundamental human right,” said Sup. Holly Mitchell, who first introduced the idea for a “Right To Counsel” program last year. “I believe that our county’s Right To Counsel ordinance is an important part of fulfilling that vision. And we’ll have an L.A. County where, regardless of income, every Angeleno will have access to affordable, accessible legal services.”

Mods, can you ditch the “share this” in the title? It didn’t show up in cut and paste.
this will force rents even higher
Landlords may find it more cost effective to employ men of wisdom and baseball bats.
Who cares what they do in CA? They are retarded and deserve every misfortune coming their way.
What’s wrong with you people in CA? Can’t you see that this crap is costing you major employers (e.g., most recently Tesla)? With the tax base leaving CA, where do you idiots who remain think the missing dollars are going to come from? Politicians won’t reduce spending, so you might as well bend over now and brace yourself...
Rent just increased for everyone in that area. If lawyers are needed the expense goes up which is re-couped with higer rent.
Don’t ya love it when the lawyers get involved?
This will drive the housing market into the ground.
Property values will fall thru the floor................and so will tax revenues.....................
“Rent payment? We ain’t got no rent payment. We don’t need no rent payment. I don’t have to give you any stinkin’ rent payment!”
CA is maybe a year away from collapse, when everyone realizes it’s too late to sell their house at last year’s rate and no one is there to buy it
You should ping the Admin Moderator for such a request. Not youself.
The large developers love this: Drive the mom-and-pop landlords out of business so they can swoop in and develop high-end condos, with the mandated least number of units going to “low income.”
Seeing this all over So Cal.
Question: Is Blackrock buying up a lot of those rental properties?
Yes, according to my son who follows real estate trends closely.
Yep and SCREENING. I have rental properties in upstate NY and they have similar rules. NY and CA are trying to outdo themselves in a race to the bottom to be the state with the most business unfriendly, private property hating environment.
I have a unit that has been vacant since 4/1 and I REFUSE to rent to anyone with any kind of red flag waving as it will be almost impossible to get them out. I have had about 150 inquiries, 2% of which are actually minimally qualified (credit score over 600, no smoking/vaping, make 3X income to rent ratio, good previous landlord reference)
NINETY EIGHT PERCENT of the responders do not meet the above qualifications!! I refuse to anyone who tells me they are “looking for a fresh start” which means the police will be at their door every day.
Yes. I was thinking about the low income landlords. On Social Security, rent out a room or the house you in herited from your parents, tenants refuse to pay...you are so screwed.
“Squatting is a fundamental human right.”
“Food (shoplifting) is a fundamental human right.”
Which is also funny (not ha ha funny). We also have a business that has to work with Big Corporate Apartment and government housing. It is almost IMPOSSIBLE to get anyone to return your call and we’re vendors. I can’t imagine how hard it is to get a hold of them if you are a tenant even through a web portal.
I’ve often had to show up in person to an office that is closed maybe 80% of the regular M-F work week.
Here in Pa both renter and landlord are required to have a lawyer at an eviction hearing.
Trial lawyers and teachers are among the rats biggest contributors. The reasons are obvious.
