Nippon Steel hires Mike Pompeo to advise on U.S. Steel deal
Reuters ^ | July 20, 2024

Japan's biggest steelmaker, Nippon Steel Corp... has hired former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to help with its effort to acquire U.S. Steel ...

"We look forward to working alongside him to further emphasize the ways in which Nippon Steel's acquisition of U.S. Steel bolsters the country's economic and national security," Nippon Steel said

...

Pompeo had not been given a specific job title within the company.

...

Although both steelmakers have received all regulatory approvals outside of the United States for their proposed $14.9 billion merger, they face political opposition and regulatory scrutiny from within the United States.

Nippon Steel also faces objections from the powerful United Steelworkers (USW) union, which fears the deal could lead to job losses.

...

Both Trump and Joe Biden have said they would block the deal.

Nippon Steel's key negotiator on the deal, Vice Chairman Takahiro Mori, visited the United States this month, including U.S. Steel facilities, and met stakeholders and employees, the company said earlier this week.

Does this make him have to register as a foreign agent or that he works for a foreign government?

If a nation cannot own and produce its own steel, it is finished.

Tucker Carlson must be right about Pompeo. He is a snake.

Nothing wrong with foreign investment but, IMHO the government should insist in acquiring a golden share in any foreign owned company buying a domestic one with strategic value, so that it can if necessary veto decisions that are not in the national interest, such as closing sites and moving the manufacturing abroad.

This is how DC works.

Cabinet members should have a lifetime ban on lobbying for anything for anyone.

There was a time when I would have wished him well and that he gets a lot of money because he would not be welcome here again. That isn’t true now. Principles don’t matter to most any more. It is all just about the money.

I guess Pompeo will not be in Trump’s cabinet despite his new silhouette.

Disappointing to hear this about Pompeo, given his bona fides. He’s cashed in his experience, and now is a mouthpiece for foreign governments. Disloyal.

We would be producing our own steel -- with foreign investment in our country. That's a good thing.

I can't imagine we'll keep making steel in this country for long without that foreign investment. I don't know enough about the details of this deal to know whether Nippon is the best buyer, but this mindless opposition to foreign companies is such a self-own.

“We would be producing our own steel — with foreign investment in our country. That’s a good thing.”

A lot of foreign takeovers are only about getting the customers and the business and moving the manufacturing offshore. Dont be deluded.

Nippon already has a sizable presence in the U.S.

I never liked Pompeo but this is hardly a reason to criticize him. Opposing the acquisition of U.S. Steel to “protect American jobs” is laughable. U.S. Steel is a fading dinosaur that isn’t even a titan in the industry anymore.

A lot of foreign takeovers are only about getting the customers and the business and moving the manufacturing offshore.

In the steel industry, it’s actually the opposite.

The U.S. government is a major buyer of steel — mainly for military production and highway bridges.

Federal law dating back to the 1930s requires government contracts to use at least 55% domestic content for these materials. This number has grown in recent years, and will be 75% by 2029.

Foreign steel producers like Nippon (Japan) and ArcelorMittal (Great Britain) are expanding their U.S. presence to take advantage of these domestic production requirements.
