Bob Menendez tells allies he plans on resigning after federal bribery conviction

Newly minted felon New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez has told allies that he plans to resign following his conviction on federal bribery charges, according to a report Wednesday.

NBC News, citing two unnamed sources “directly familiar with those conversations,” reported that the three-term Democrat voiced his intent to call it quits.

Menendez, 70, was convicted by a Manhattan federal jury Tuesday of 16 counts for trading his political power to benefit three Garden State businessmen and the governments of Egypt and Qatar in exchange for hundreds of thousands in cash, gold bars and gifts.

He refused to say whether he would step down while leaving court Tuesday — even as Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and fellow New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker called on him to resign.

I'm not sure how long Menendez can hang in there without resigning, but we know the rules are (D)ifferent in this situation than they would be if he was a Republican.

Should he resign in the next few weeks that would leave the Democrats with 46 Senators and Republicans 49. The 4 independents (Manchin, Synema, Sanders, and King) normally vote with the Democrats but I doubt there is much Democrat legislation that Synema (and possibly Manchin) would vote "yea" on at this point. Synema seems pretty fed up with the Democrat party and Manchin probably wouldn't mind putting the screws to them on his way out the door.

So, I believe we are at a stalemate on any major legislation passing Congress for the next 6 months.

Thoughts?

Schumer and Booker, two paragons of virtue, asking “Gold Bar” Bob to resign. That’s rich.

The rules are absolutely different, the idea that Menendez “plans to resign” after his conviction as if he’s doing us all a favor is insane, he should be expelled or somehow removed from the Senate immediately.

The House expelled George Santos with the help of Republicans, Menendez is a crook and now he’s a convicted crook, he should also be an expelled US Senator.

He is up for election this year. Potentially, this office could be in play.

He was running as an independent. His being out of the race helps the Dem candidate.

This conviction also sends a very clear message to anyone thinking of turning on Deep State.

The Dem candidate, Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ), will most likely get appointed to finish Menendez' term, and will be the "incumbent" on election day.

All the sudden, he starts doing the right thing...For appearances sake! How much will he pull down for his “ordinary average guy” speeches?

Note to self. President Trump is not a convicted felon. You’re not convicted v until sentencing. These MSM pundit punks and pukes who call President Trump a convicted felon are lying.

How many other Senators have been bought with gold bars, cash, and gifts from Qatar and Egypt?

Which other countries are also buying our Senators?

The Senate should be one 6 year term and done. Congress should be three 2 year terms and leave the Executive as is. No one who exceeds the mean social security age should serve.

President should be a single 6 year term. That gives that person plenty of time to get things done.

I know.

The Menendez conviction is akin to going to a doctor due to a ‘minor’ symptom only to find out that that you have a cancer that has metastasized to several vital organs.
