Who is “they”?
Probably because they knew:
1. He was disturbed and potentially dangerous.
2. One of their rifles, an AR-15, was missing.
I will not be surprised to find out that their call to police regarding their missing son hours before the assassination attempt included the fact that he was armed with a rifle.
No one calls the police about their 20 year old son being missing for a few hours unless they know something horrible is about to happen. A 12 year old, maybe. A 20 year old man, no.

I have kids and they’re in their twenties and they are getting off of social media 100%. They are having kids and they want no photos of their kids online. So, it’s not unreasonable to think that this creep didn’t have an online presence. I’m seeing more and more of it in that age group.
The lack of social media presence could indicate this kid was socially isolated, which is consistent with prior killers of famous people in his age bracket.
That said, yes, the “investigation” is a crock so Far. The government acts like they want us to think they have things to cover up, or maybe they want to attract our attention from something else.
